He was the commentator for one of our greatest ever triumphs on that Spring day in 1978. OSBOURNE!! One NIL!! Another great Sports commentator who I grew up watching on the BBC through the 60s and 70s and one that I respected immensely. A master of many Sports and his voice was often the sound track to my own sporting life when growing up! I also loved his ColemanBalls...! RIP A true broadcasting great!
Is it just me Warky or were the commentators of yesteryear so much better than we have today ? Ken Wolstenholme, Hugh Johns, Brian Moore, David Coleman etc., the current crop couldn't hold a candle to them IMO
I absolutely agree KIO! I do think however that Motty is just so overated! Barry Davis was another great sports commentator in his day with Football, Tennis and Hockey. I know he is still alive but has now retired from commentating. Tony Gubba RIP was another very good and yet underated commentator from that era! I know this will be very controvesial but I have to say that irrespective of what he has done, Stewart Hall was also very good and very witty! Please dont shoot me for saying this, I am absolutely disgusted by what he has done but the fact remains that I found him very entertaining in his summaries and commenatories!
Another thing mate is that they had no co-commentators in those days so had to do all the hard work themselves
Here are some of the best Colemanballs! Thatâs the fastest time ever run â but itâs not as fast as the world record.â âA truly international field, no Britons involved.â âThe Republic of China â back in the Olympic Games for the first time.â âDonât tell those coming in the final result of that fantastic match, but letâs just have another look at Italyâs winning goal.â âHeâs 31 this year â last year he was 30.â âHe just canât believe whatâs not happening to him.â âIn a moment we hope to see the pole vault over the satellite.â âHe is accelerating all the time. The last lap was run in 64 seconds and the one before that in 62.â âItâs gold or nothing ... and itâs nothing. He comes away with the silver medal.â âThere is Brendan Foster, by himself with 20,000 people.â âForest have now lost six matches without winning.â âThe front wheel crosses the finish line, closely followed by the back wheel.â âAnd hereâs Moses Kiptanui â the 19-year-old Kenyan who turned 20 a few weeks ago.â âIf that had gone in, it would have been a goal.â âThis evening is a very different evening from the morning we had this morning.â âI think there is no doubt, sheâll probably qualify for the final.â âNobody has ever won the title twice before. He (Roger Black) has already done that.â âBoth of the Villa scorers â Withe and Mortimer â were born in Liverpool as was the Villa manager Ron Saunders who was born in Birkenhead.â "And the line-up for the final of the women's 400 metres hurdles includes three Russians, two East Germans, a Pole, a Swede and a Frenchman." "We estimate, and this isn't an estimation, that Greta Waltz is 80 seconds behind."
