My tribute to the architect of the finest Q.P.R. team of all time. http://rollercoasterranger.wordpress.com/2012/11/26/dave-sexton-a-true-visionary/
A really excellent write Roller - you put the best memories that I have from my time following QPR into vivid pictures. Dave Sexton was the conductor of all of them. A great Manager, and he always seemed a really good bloke.
Another great piece from Roller, our resident Poet Laureate of the Rs. Sexton was slightly before my time, but looking back at that classic 75/76 team I can see why he’s put up there alongside Stock as one of our most important Managers. Perhaps it’s a bit petty, but I have to say that one thing that has really irritated me since the news came out of his passing is the way that almost every article newspaper article I read or TV report I see describes him as the “former Chelsea and Manchester United Manager”, with his time at QPR either not mentioned at all or just referenced as a mere footnote at the end. It’s typical of the kind of lazy myopic journalism which feeds into the idea that there is no life outside the current big 4 or 5 clubs, nor has there ever been.
What a perfect obituary Roller. An exceptional piece: pacey, polished, informative and just right in length and fluency. Fantastic read mate - and timely. Let this be our wreath for Sir Dave, very much a leader amongst our all time greats. RIP.
I completely agree TIMK. As I said his team at QPR must have been his crown achievement, the closest he ever got to realising his vision. Have you seen the “Redknapp leads Sexton tributes” article on the official website? “Sexton, of course, masterminded the R’s to a second place finish in the old First Division in 1975/76, as well as managing the likes of Leyton Orient and Manchester United.” No mention of Chelsea!
