Just finished watching "Saints live" on you tube and found myself drifting-off listening to Deano Hammond talking, (Love him, saints legend and all that). Good knowledge of the game but, I couldnt imagin him as a radio commentator and that brought me on to the question of who takes over From Dave ???

Jo Tessem would be my guess because he has covered for Dave on a few occasions

Franny's done a fair bit of punditry in the media and is a legend.
I was going to mention Matt but I can't see the Beeb employing him in any way!.
I always enjoyed Spike Armstrong commentating on Saints.

I misread that as “Franny’s done a fair bit of poetry”. Made me chuckle.

    With power he sprung
Shot fast out of a cannon
    Into his own net

It is a shame that Dave Merrington is retiring from the BBC Radio Solent commentating. I think Radio Solent is pretty dreadful these days and there are some radio presenters on there like Lou Hannon who are so bad that I have to turn the radio off - anyone who is into musical theatre needs to be shot!! However, I think that the sports team is exceptional. The culture of the Solent Sports team seems to be quite jokey and you imagine that there is a lot of leg-pulling in that office. This also applies to the commentary for me too. Dave Merrington and Adam Blackmore are brilliant, the former's knowledge and the latters cynicism make an excellent combination. The only thing I find abour Merrington is that he often says "what they don't want to be doing is....." and then, as if by magic, Saints will do exactly that! I find that having the commentary on whilst at the match is hugely insightful and Merrington's contribution adds to my understanding. He will be very much missed as far as I am concerned.

As far as replacememts, I regret that I find Jo Tessam very difficult to understand. I can recall back in the day that Gordon Watson used to co-commentate and wonder if he would be in contention. He used to be quite amusing from recollection. I have no idea where he is nowadays. David Armstrong is a good call too. However, I think that it will be Frannie who gets the nod given that there is no better ambassador for the club.
