He was a true character in the game and an inspiration. I didn't like his personality but probably wouldn't have said that to his face http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/31704507
Saw him a few times and can best describe him as a skilfully wholehearted player that every team needs. What you saw is what you got with him not like little Bremner who would sneak some afters into a tackle hence the photograph. Banged a great goal in against us in a cup replay in 1961 at WHL.
They dont make them like that anymore! RIP to one of the great names of my youth. As BLT says above, a football legend!!!
and never sent off, just heard that on the radio and I was surprised. If he played today I doubt he would get through a season with out at least one red card. The difference between him and other hard men of that era, is that is also had a lot of ability and knew how to use it as well as a hard but fair tackle. He would have been able to adapt to todays game others would not. RIP
Great player, just the type that we need at the minute. If I remember correctly he was one of Cloughies first signings when he went to Derby and he built the team around him and ended up winning the league. I was surprised to hear that he'd never been sent off because he was a hard man in the stamp of Tommy Smith and Graeme Souness, great footballers and hard as nails, every team needs a one.
Tommy Smith!! Jesus..You wouldn't have wanted to bump into him down a back lane..He looked as hard as nails..
