http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/cardiff-city-former-manager-dave-3189230 The former manager claims he is owned hundreds of thousands of pounds for taking the club to the FA Cup final and various play-off rounds during his time in charge. Former Cardiff City manager Dave Jones is suing the club for nearly £540,000. A document filed at the High Court shows Jones claims he is owed the money in unpaid bonuses and for having his employment terminated. He is claiming: * £150,000 for reaching the FA Cup final in 2008; * £100,000 for reaching the play-offs in April 2010; * £250,000 for reaching the play-off final in May 2010; * £100,000 for reaching the play-offs in May 2011 * £189,821 in unpaid termination payments. The claim deducts a £250,000 sum Jones received from the club in 2011 for âoutstanding bonusesâ. It means the total amount being claimed is £539,821, which the document says is as a result of Cardiff City acting in breach of contract. However, the claim says that, in turn, Cardiff City is claiming £750,000 from Jonesâ new club, Sheffield Wednesday. But it describes the counter-claim as âmisconceivedâ with âno real prospect of successâ. The claim reveals Jones was paid £750,000 a year as Cardiff City manager and that that would be his salary for as long as the club was playing in the Championship. Details of his contract â effective from January 1, 2007 and revealed in the claim â show he would be paid a £100,000 bonus for reaching the play-offs and £250,000 for reaching the play-off final. He would receive a £750,000 bonus for promotion to the Premier League, where his salary would have doubled to £1.5m. He would have received another £750,000 for retaining Premier League status. Jones, of Peterston-super-Ely in the Vale of Glamorgan, managed Cardiff City from 2005 until 2011. The claim details how in May 2011, Gethin Jenkins, then Cardiff Cityâs CEO, informed Jones the club was terminating his employment. But the club continued to make monthly payments equivalent to his salary, which Jones had agreed to receive instead of a lump sum due upon his termination. The claim says that after Jones was appointed manager at Sheffield Wednesday FC, Cardiff City stopped making payments and instead is claiming £750,000 â 12 monthsâ salary â from Jonesâ new club. It adds: â[Cardiff City] also alleges breach of contract by the claimant but has, to date, failed to identify any loss sustained by the defendant save as to the purported payment allegedly due from Sheffield Wednesdayâ. The claim states that after Cardiff City reached the FA Cup Final, then chairman Peter Ridsdale âverbally agreedâ to pay Jones a £150,000 bonus âin consideration for his achievement in steering the defendant to its first FA Cup Final since 1927â. In the following seasons, Jones managed the club as it reached its highest league finish for 38 years in 2009 and the play-off final in 2010. In May 2010, Vincent Tan and Dato Chan Tien Ghee took over the club, with the latter replacing Ridsdale as chairman. The claim says Ridsdale âorally explained to them the provisions and the intention of the parties in relation to the contractâ, in particular the contractual obligation to pay Jones if his employment was terminated.
no wonder he had such a sour face, the fat greedy ****.................................mind ew im fking tamping if my firm shorts me by a 20note
Jones and Ridsdale. Talking about this Saturday. Maybe it was better we lost to Blackpool. What would those 2 have done with the PL millions. I wouldnt have paid him £75k a year. Unpaid bonuses!!!!! FFS!!!!!!!!
some pretty outrageous figures there lads. if those are what he is genuinely owed then thats that and we have to just grit our teeth and hand him over his dough. but on a side issue, no wonder he showed such blind loyalty to our club! blimey, £750k a year, then £1.5m if we got to the premiership with another £750k bonus if we stayed up? thats hard nosed hammam / ridsdale negotiating at its best. right up there with the aaron ramsey deal......
Portsmouth springs to mind... We're in a much better place going up with VT and MM in charge even if we are in red shirts.
First off, Dave Jones did not have any hands on the money!! Who on here would not negotiate the best deal for themselves when negotiating an employment contract? It is a matter of record that the Riddler was crap at putting a realistic price on anything. Is that Dave Jones' fault? Does anyone know what MM is on per annum? Has he got a promotion bonus? I would suggest he does and I would further suggest he won't be far away from what DJ negotiated and quite possibly on a better contract. The club has pretty much acknowledged he's owed the money and will, I believe, settle this quickly. However, the verbal and oral agreements are always suspect when the riddler and Sam are involved. It's a shame DJ has to take this action as I believe he did a fantastic job under extreme circumstances and managed to achieve progress every season he was manager and also get us to a FA cup final at Wembley. Hilts you don't rate DJ which is fair enough but you should at least have the good grace to acknowledge the things he achieved as our manager. If you don't think he was worth 75k per annum fair enough but I think you are blinded by your dislike for him. You seem to be under the impression DJ held the purse strings and your cheap shot is just that a cheap shot driven by your myopic view of the man.
taff, thats all true, and i get that. but the way i look at it is that when he started we were in the championship, and when he left we were still in the championship (but in a much, much worse state players wise). he was paid a salary far beyond his value to the club for much of his reign. the difference between MM and DJ is that malky has delivered. he wants to build a relationship with the fans, and the players are highly motivated and professional. he also seems to want to be here, whilst jonesy sums up alot of what is wrong in football at the moment, in terms of a lack of accountability, and bloated salaries.
Nope i dont believe he controlled the purse strings. I also dont blame him for his shocking salary. Clearly Ridsdales fault. I do however think he would have blown even more money on overpaid rubbish whilst sticking to a 442 formation and sending us back down. I can back up loads of examples why I dont rate him - nothing to do with dislike. I dont know the bloke why should I dislike him? Think about what your saying - extreme circumstances - £750k salary. Extreme ?? I dont think so.
Totally agree that DJ did not succeed, my point is some believe DJ held the purse strings and he didn't. Some believe he negotiated players contracts, he didn't. The fact he got himself a tidy sum of money isn't his fault, he negotiated a contract to suit him, anyone who goes for any job does the same. I do not agree with the obscene money any manager or players get, I don't think they are worth the sums bandied about, but again they negotiate a contract for themselves. DJ is his own man and we all know he's a bit sour-faced and a moaner but he succeeded and his teams over-acheived each season. Folk blame DJ for the amount of players that left prior to his departure but they forget DJ didn't negotiate contracts, he'd have a say but he would not be involved in negotiating salaries. Players left because the Malaysians did not want them and this is partly borne out as the wage bill has gone up since DJ left!
No Olifinjana left as he was on loan , JL Samuel left because he was on loan , Bywater left because he was on loan , JET left because he was on loan , Burke left because he was out of contract , Matthews left after being treated appallingly by Jones. Dekel Keinan wasnt good enough or Quinn. Bellamy left because he was on loan. Bothroyd out of contract. Bywater , Jet and JLloyd were also utter rubbish! Nothing to do with the Malaysians. A season where we spent hugely on wages and it ended with the squad left in tatters. Dave Jones fault.
Um, whoever had the purse strings did not agree extending the contracts of Bothroyd or Burke because they possibly did not think they were worth it. Burke also stated he wanted to be closer to his family. The loanees would have got a contract if they were deemed good enough and as you point out they were not, but who in the club did not think they were good enough? Why wasn't DJ buying players in the January before his departure? I'd suggest the Malaysian had already decided well before then they were going to sack DJ. As I said the team overachieved under DJ and always moved further up the table year on year. He was sacked after failing to get promotion in his last season. I think we all agreed that he had to go and the Malaysians had already decided long before that, they just needed to get it set up so a new manager would have a blank slate when he walked into the club.
Whatever the rights and wrongs of DJ and his management, the bottom line is that he claims money is owed to him some of which was "orally" agreed with Ridsdale. Well unless Ridsdale agrees that arrangement, it's one's word against the other. And would anyone in their right mind believe anything Ridsdale says. You could always tell when he was lying - his lips moved. As for the counter claim against the Wendies, why? I don't get that at all.
Ridsdale got us some real investors that a lot of clubs have had trouble finding, he is not taking us to court. Not one word of congratulations from Jones but he was happy to get £15,000 a week from us. If he did not realise he was on his way do you think Bothroyd and Ledley would not have had new contracts so at least if they were sold he had money to spend. McCormack was given away. Jones decimated the squad hoping a new manager would get us relegated. The timing is perfect don`t you think? Are you saying Jones did not negotiate his own contract, he just signed on the dotted line? These amounts when the tax man was taking us to court are disgusting. His job was to get us promoted and he failed now he wants a bonus. This will infuriate most Cardiff fans. jck
Unfortunately, in my mind, Jones successes at our club are massively overshadowed by his failures when in a prime position. And whats all this verbal agreement nonsense? since when do these type of people accept things when it's verbal? and this is not this first time this "verbal" agreement has raised its head at our club, that shouldn't be entertained. Give him what he can prove he is owed and not a penny more.
Jck, read my posts again, clearly there is some miss-understanding on your part. Already stated DJ is a miserable sod in my post so your point about a lack of congratulations is moot. Regarding Ledley, he wanted away and did not want to sign a contract but he negotiated via his manager and the Riddlers people not DJ. Bothroyd also tried to hold the club to ransom believing his own press. I believe the Malaysians did not want him on his terms. This is borne out by VT stating this week that he will not break the bank for individuals. McCormack was given away, a matter of opinion but it would NOT have been DJ negotiating the move would it, so stop trying to blame DJ for the departure of McCormack and others. I agree the figures are not good reading and I have also sated my view on this earlier. Yes his job was to get us promoted, he failed and he was sacked. The monies he is after are contractual obligations agreed with DJ and the club when he was hired as further contracts agreed during his tenure. The bonus he wants honoured is not for promotion, go read the article before posting ill-informed comments, it makes you look foolish. People will be upset about the figures being bandied about but this isn't new for our club or any other football club. The fact DJ was offered a Kings ransom is more to do with the miss-management (or clever management) of Sam Hamman and Peter (the riddler) Ridsdale, you'll need to read between the lines on this last comment regarding Sam and how he funded the club. Sam started our journey but ultimately failed in his dream due to Cardiff council refusing the allow the stadium with him at the helm. Sam brought in the riddler and he was able to build the stadium even though Sam held the club to ransom at the last moment and almost sent us into admin. The riddler with the help of other board members got DT in and then VT followed. Will always be grateful for what both Sam and the riddle did in getting us to this point but I will also remember the way they both operated, not pleasant reading but hard times dictated certain methods I guess. As for DJ I will also remember the cup final and the play off finals and some of the great football played under his tenure. He moved the club every season with players being let go (no he didn't sell them, the club did!) transfer embargoes and all the nonsense behind the scenes, yes he comes across as a miserable old git and isn't always gracious in defeat but name me a manger who is happy when they are on the end of a losing score?
SBFF, the club have already acknowledged he is owed the money. Many people on here and elsewhere have acknowledged the players we had were poor and we consistently punched above our weight!
Luckily I can read and so I know what others have written in this thread, why do you feel the need to reiterate? We also didn't "consistently punch above our weight either", we failed when we were expected to succeed, how is that punching above our weight, which is why we were known as chokers, last season we overachieved, but then that wasn't under DJ. I remember how stubborn DJ was and how much that cost us, a good manager to a point, but not as good as some thought.
Do you call 4-9 favs with Bothroyd Bellamy Chopra and Burke punching above our weight? The sums involved are abusive considering we were being told all the time the club was close to administration. Anyone who does not want a written contract is mad, we can all claim verbal agreements. jck
Let's get one thing straight - Ridsdale did not introduce the new owners at all. TG was grateful that the club gave his son a shot at a trial period and became involved personally. He was, and is not a "money man" in the true football sense of the word, and it was Dato Chan Tien Ghee who brought VT to the table - nothing at all to do with Ridsdale. In fact, Ridsdale nearly scuppered the whole deal with his exhorbitant valuation of the share captial he held in the club at the time, and seemed to be determined to get an "over the top" payoff to walk away from his tenure here. Actually, Vincent Tan was walking away. It was Steve Borley who went to Malaysia personally to resurrect the faltered deal whilst Ridsdale was sidelined by the board and told to keep out of it. Opinions about DJ's time here vary widely. He managed the club through very difficult financial times that are sometimes used as a reason (excuse?) for his ultimate failings. He made mistakes like any manager, but his dogmatic approach to playing systems coupled with some very ill judged man management decisions, particularly Mathews, labelled him as the wrong guy to take the club any further. The fact that he comes across on the media as a whinging miserable ****er is irrelevant. It just means that he's a whinging miserable ****er. I remember his post match comment after we beat Wednesday up there back in March, grudgingly admitting that he thought we should just about "limp over the line" this season.
