James Scowcroft who is now a journalist has done and interview with Darren Eadie about depression and how he had to retire early because of his knee injury. I remember at the time we had 2 players both with the same injury and both had to retire early. Matt Jones was the other one who we signed from Leeds to replace Neil Lennon. Here is the article in the independent. Well worth a read http://www.independent.co.uk/news/p...ll--depression-and-panic-attacks-7936382.html
I feel for the guy and there should be more support ....but my life story would make his look like a stroll in the park...
I remember Martin tried to sign him for 3 years. He was a top notch player, and so sad that his career ended so quickly. Wish the guy well.
An unenviable storey but certainly not one exclusive to football. How many people over the last 5 years have gone from having a good job/income, working in a team & feeling valued to being made redundant almost overnight. And it is a soul destroying experience.
Having suffered through such things myself, I'd like to say that any circumstances can lead to a depression- the successful and wealthy can experience it too. I experienced something similar during first year of university, supposedly one of the most enjoyable times of life. Therefore I think it's good that footballers are finally being able to speak out, as key figures in society. I hope that this will help raise awareness.
Part of the problem is people dont understand it. They just think weak people suffer it but if you look over the years some of the people who have suffered from depression you realise that is not the case Having never experienced anything like it I cant say I fully understand it but i know its an illness
Depression is something people don't really understand unless they have experienced it which I haven't . Agree with the poster who said it can happen to anyone. All the best to anyone out there with depression.
I remember listening to Stan Collymore talking about the depression he suffered during his time at Villa. The manager at the time (Gregory) couldn't understand it because he thought that he had nothing to be depressed about. Stan explained it by saying just because you are rich it doesn't exclude you from getting cancer. Likewise, just because you are rich you are not excluded from suffering from depression. They are both illnesses.
It's a terrible thing to suffer from, anyone who says that someone has nothing to be depressed about, doesn't understand the issue at all. I was having a pint with Deano the week before he revealed what he was going through and nobody had any idea about how dark a place he was in, including those closest to him. It's because it's so easy to hide, that it's such a dangerous illness.
Think we are of a similar age Barwell ... do you recall Laurie Cunningham ... similar story .. such a shame .. unplayable when fit and on top of his game ...
Spot on FMF ... there have been many suicides of people who, to the majority of us, seemed to have very enviable, successful lives
Gary Speed came completly out the blue and shocked everyone. He was having a laugh and a joke on tele only a few hours before his death. When they are with people they seem fine buts its in their spare time no one knows what is happening or how people feel
