Not only is it a dilemma for the lad but if he does choose England and plays well then it could signal the end of his playing days at Sunderland. It was always going to be difficult to prise him away from Fergie but if this is the start of an international career then we have less chance of getting him.

    Taken from today's Echo:

SUNDERLAND’S Danny Welbeck has been drafted into England’s depleted squad for tonight’s friendly with Ghana at wembley.

Welbeck has been rewarded after scoring in England Under-21s’ 4-0 win against Denmark U21 last week.

The senior call-up means that, if he plays, there is no chance Welbeck could end up playing FOR Ghana in the future.

The striker’s parents are from Ghana and Sunderland team-mates Asamoah Gyan, John Mensah and Sulley Muntari – who he could face tonight – have all urged him to choose to play for the African nation.

Welbeck, 20, is on loan from Manchester United and has six Barclays Premier League goals to his name this season, despite a long spell out injured.

He has three goals in 10 appearances for England Under-21s

Yep welder, I said on an earlier thread that it is bitter sweet news, great to have an up and coming star playing for us but if SAF agrees to let him go, a big if, there will be plenty of takers. I can hear it now, what do you think of Welbeck Harry, we have not asked about him but he is a good player who would do well at Spurs but Mr Levey looks after tthat sort of thing.

On the other hand, involvement in senior international squads might persuade him that he needs to belong to a team where he is more or less guaranteed a place in the starting 11 week in week out. Unlikely at the top 5 or 6 teams so we could be the best of the rest as far as he is concerned.

Good point Smiffy, definitely not guaranteed first team football at Man Utd so could just persuade him where his future lies. Only problem is convincing SAF to part with him.
