Sunderland resigned to losing Danny Welbeck
    by James Hunter, Evening Chronicle
    Jun 11 2011
MANCHESTER UNITED have told Sunderland they have no chance of bringing Danny Welbeck back to Wearside on loan.

Welbeck was a hit during his loan stay with the Black Cats and, while boss Steve Bruce publicly admitted that there was no chance of a permanent move for the England Under-21 star, he privately held out hopes of another loan next season.

But those hopes were dashed this week as, during discussions between the clubs over a potential £12m triple move for Darron Gibson, John O’Shea and Wes Brown, the Red Devils made it clear that Welbeck will be a part of their first-team squad next season.

Bruce will monitor developments at Old Trafford over the summer in the hope that further signings might change United’s stance over Welbeck. But for now he will turn his attentions to other attacking options, with talks having already started with Korean striker Ji Dong-Won, while Spurs’ Peter Crouch, Liverpool’s David N’Gog and Ipswich Town’s Connor Wickham are also in his sights.

Meanwhile, Welbeck will be hoping United are as good as their word, as he does not want to find himself back in the reserves at Old Trafford while Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Javier Hernandez and Michael Owen are all ahead of him in the queue.

Welbeck enjoyed his time at Sunderland and admitted it was the best year of his fledgling career.

He said: “My main aim was to come to Sunderland and get games and minutes under my belt week-in, week-out.

“I succeeded with that and I was really happy with the way the season went.

“That two month-spell after the Chelsea game was the best of my career. I was getting a few goals and my performance level was up there.

“Sunderland have got a good core of young players and everyone’s hungry and wants to improve – everyone’s pushing forward together – and I was delighted they finished in the top 10 and above Newcastle.”

Welbeck’s loan spell at Sunderland was curtailed by a hamstring problem, but he has now made a full recovery and is set to line up for England Under-21s tomorrow as they kick-off their European Under 21 Championship campaign against Spain in Denmark.

“I would have loved to have played in the run-in,” he added, “but you have to move on and learn from the experience.”

I'm happy about the loan thing, was concerned he would go to Everton on lone. Also like what he says about us and about wanting first team footy and TBH think he will be back up at best with Man U's players so may not be over yet.

Also pleased that it orces us to get strikers sorted, OK with names mentioned with Ngog and Wickham as back up and Doug Won is untested. Also happy that Harry wants Gyan if we get Crouch because that should end our intrest in Crouch. We need a big name partner for Gyan and I'm hoping we have one lined up.

Would have thought so would use all off the Henderson Money to get him maybe a bit more, don't think that it's gonna happen with the Korean lad and prob N'Gog coming would love Wickham to come as well think that would be an interesting young strike line up.
