Had a thought cross my mind during the Swans match - what better DEFENSIVE right back have we had at Leicester over the years that I have watched Leicester. A few names came to mind ie Whitworth and Rodrigues, but were quickly dismissed - they were better going forward than Simpson but better defenders - no. The only 2 that I could think of that would give him a run for his money were Pontus Kaamark and John Sjoberg (who played mainly as a centre half). Watched my first Leicester game in 1963, so my memory may not be as it was. Anybody that I have forgotten? (Please not Kyle Naughton).
Totally agree with you, I started in 1963 as well! At the beginning of the season I wanted him out of the club because of the problems he had off field. but he seems to have sorted his life out hopefully off the pitch, and now become a very good right back imo good enough to be in the England squad.
You say not Kyle Naughton, but he was a cut above what we had at the time, probably the best we'd had since Grayson when i started watching football.
.................. and look where he is now - sitting on the bench of a team we have just thumped 4-0. Again, he was better going forward than Simpson, and a real fans favourite when he was here, but defensively better? Dont think so. Just my opinion though. Larry was decent, but not a patch on Pontus.
Kyle Naughton was immense for us - was a reason why he got our young player of the year and was in the championship team of the year. Unfortunately for him there were players ahead of him at Spurs and when he had the opportunity to come back to us, he refused - oh well, never mind.
We did go through a lot of **** right backs over the years, only decent ones we have had was Richard Stearman, Ritchie De Laet and Kyle Naughton Who wants reminding about the likes of Darren Kenton, Michael Lamey, Robbie Neilson, John Pantsil, Lee Peltier, Kerrea Gilbert
Simpson, as is the Whole of the DEF, is playing a massive part of our sucsess this season. He's been quality. I was moaning alot about our DEF early on in the seaspn, but now Simpson & Fuchs are regulars it's been fantastic.
... agree ... Kaamark was often the best player in the whole team from right back ... still has Jununho in his pocket friom that League Cup final ...
For sheer consistency over many seasons I'd go with Whitworth. Simpson has been great this season as has everyone else in the team. After 51years of supporting Leicester I can't believe what's happened this past 12 months.
... even if we don't get over the line ... has been top of the pile longer than any other Leicester City team in footballing history ...
one of the best full backs (was a left full back) was Everton Carr When questioned about Everton Carr by a fan Jock repleied "he takes a bloody good throw in" Best comedy act i'd seen on a football field.
I've no idea why we sold him. I've got a mint-condition pair of his boots signed, if any of you are interested?
Probably was considered more of a Right Back rather than a Wing Back, most teams look for an attacking RB, but when you have someone like Mahrez in front of you, you aren't looking for them to overlap, but sit behind and defend.
Only one I think you missed was Mixhael Morrison - whilst he was a CB he played RB in the league 1 season.
