Just got a reply from Danny Simpson on facebook.

I basically just bullshitted to see if I could get a reply.

I said 'any signs of a new contract for you yet? should sign a deal til 2016!'

He replied 'had some chats mate but just have 2 see n work hard again next season'

So yeah, hardly ground-breaking news, but thought I would share it with you.

  2. Not over the moon. He's a good player but i hope to see a big improvement in him or a new RB entirely. He stands off players way too much and just lets them stroll into the box.

I dont rate Simpson too highly but it would be nice to get him tied up, sheerly for the fact he's improved since the championship, hopefully might get even better and be able to not back away from his man constantly.

When did you ask him? I can't see any replies like that on his feed.

    PS: Nevermind, just spotted it.

Anyway, okay news I guess. Hopefully he won't be our 1st choice in that position for TOO long and we can eventually find an improvement to make the defence more solid.

In my opinion he is a solid if unspectacular right back. He just needs to learn to stop backing off. His timing of tackles is excellent and he is quite strong when need be. His crossing is also pretty decent. I think his standing off problem is easily fixed in training and hopefully Pardew is trying to get that in his head.

Surely if it was easily fixed it would have improved over two seasons? Hes improved in most areas, but in that area he's still at schoolboy level.

Really want him to do well because he seems a good lad, hoping to see a big improvement from him next season.

To be fair, I thought he was great in the championship season. He just seems to have got scared of the step up in opposition and gives them too much respect. I never noticed the backing off much in 09/10 or at the start of this season. E.g. at the Emirates and Upton Park, he was great.

Strange that, I thought he was dogshite most of the time in the championship, especially when I actually went to SJP because its easier to see his positioning when its not on tele.

Think hes improved this season but is still nowhere near what I'd consider a quality right back.

Average is a word I'd use to describe him.

    Not better than Beye.

Just asked him on his facebook status if he thinks hes good enough to make the step up to the england squad, wondering what he will say.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree bud. I think he has the potential to be a solid right back in the prem for yeard to come, although yes he does need to improve.

He's a solid, improving right back, but we need to sign someone to be first choice ahead of him IMO (and get shot of perch). Preferably a seasoned pro with a few years left in him who Simpson can learn the finer points from, ironically Beye was that player.

Not a bad idea, then when the other guy is ready to retire Simpson should have learned enough from him.

On another note, since Sol Campbell was meant to have an influence on the younger players (and did bugger all else), why wasnt the first thing he said to Simpson "you're backing off too much" ?

He put up an official one a couple of days ago, he was saying he would answer questions on it the best he could. Seems happy to talk to the fans.

    Agreed 100%
