He confirmed it this morning: "Danny Murphy has announced his retirement from football. The former Crewe, Liverpool, Charlton, Tottenham, Fulham and Blackburn midfielder made more than 600 senior appearances and won nine caps for England during a career spanning 20 years. He won the FA Cup, two League Cups and the UEFA Cup during his time at Anfield, and was a key part of the Fulham side that reached the Europa League final in 2010. The 36-year-old has been without a club since leaving Blackburn in the summer and has now decided to hang up his boots to concentrate full-time on taking his coaching badges and continuing his work in the media. He said: “There have been some press reports about whether I’m still playing or available but I decided a little while ago I would retire, I just didn’t make it official." “So now I’m officially retiring because I’m sick of having conversations about it and almost stringing people along. I decided three or four weeks ago I was done, and this [live on the Colin Murray show] is the best place to do it. This is me, 20 years, I’m done. I’ve had a wonderful career and can look back on it with fondness.” Source: http://talksport.com/football/exclusive-murphy-announces-his-retirement-football-13101063499 Nothing needs to said about what he meant to Fulham, other than Captain Fantastic. He looks set for an equally good media career and all best wishes for him there.
Absolute legend As far as I'm concerned any player involved in the great escape or Euro run is welcome back at the Cottage any time no matter what! Murphy's goal at Pompey puts him at the head of the queue of players I will happily buy a drink if I see them in Fulham
Over the years he became, quite simply, one of my favourite ever Fulham players. It's telling that we spent years saying, 'we have to find a replacement for Murphy - his legs won't last forever', and now a year and a half after he left us we still haven't really replaced him. His ability to cope with the physical battle in midfield and still pick out a telling pass to create a goal is a hard combination of skills to find in one player. I remember him in a pre-season friendly at Bournemouth, berating that Swedish right back we signed whose name I can never remember, schooling him in how we played and what was required of him. Great player, great captain. Despite what others have said, I hope we don't appoint him to the coaching staff. I'd rather see him get his badges then take a job at a lower division club and learn the craft of management that way. In about ten years time, I'd love to see him rock up at the Cottage as our new boss.
Stoor! That's the feller! I don't know why I can never remember his name. It's either because he hardly ever played, or it's just that I'm losing my faculties. One of the two.
class act is Danny, very underrated IMO, shame he was moved on as he was one of my favorite players. hats of to him.
All the best Danny, Great player for us at Pool and i followed your career when you moved on. Very underated player imo
Whilst everyone bemoaned the losing of Dempsey and dembele, Danny Murphy was the biggest loss for us. He is such a clever player, even when his legs were not as agile as they were he still ran a game from the centre of the pitch. He had the gift of seeing a pass that you cannot train, it is just instinctive. Agree with captain, earn your badges and develop then come back to guide us to glory. Ultimate respect, take a bow Murph's
