Sunderland want to keep Welbeck 31 Mar 2011 - 10:24:01 Sunderland RSS news feed Sunderland want to keep WelbeckRelated LinksPremier League Results Premier League News Premier League Fixtures AFTER watching Danny Welbeck make his England debut in Tuesday's friendly with Ghana, Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has reiterated his desire to keep the striker at the club beyond his loan deal. The Manchester United forward has impressed on Wearside during a season-long loan, scoring six goals in 17 appearances with his performances catching the eye of England boss Fabio Capello. Bruce has made contact with Sir Alex Ferguson over a potential permanent summer transfer but has seen his approach rebuffed with the United boss keen to keep a hold of the 20-year-old. Unless the Black Cats are prepared to pay a fee understood to be in the region of ã10m, Bruce will attempt to re-sign the Manchester-born forward on another loan deal. Whether he can convince Ferguson to sell the promising youngster remains to be seen, but the Black Cats boss insists his number one priority is to keep Welbeck in some capacity next season. Welbeck is still the big thing this summer, Bruce said. Keeping him is our number one aim. If not, I have to find a replacement. The club's been here before with Jonny Evans. Danny's done so well for us, he's probably had the best year of his career here and it's propelled him into the England squad. Before he came to us I don't think he'd played six straight games in three years. We'll do everything we can but it's very difficult to buy a 19, 20-year-old with the world at his feet off Manchester United. We'll try our best, no matter what it cost, I can say that. After scoring in the Under- 21s friendly win over Denmark on Thursday, Welbeck was on his way back to Sunderland when he received a call-up to the full squad on Monday night. It turned into a whirlwind 24 hours for the striker, coming on as an 81st minute substitute against Ghana, who have been in contact with the player regarding his eligibility to play for them. Although his late introduction was met with boos from the Ghana fans, the 19-yearold was pleased to make his senior international debut. It was a bittersweet moment. I've got love for both countries but I can't play for both, Welbeck said. The supporters weren't happy although the Ghana players afterwards were telling me I can still change. But we'll have to see about that. I've been playing for England at every single youth team level so it was a natural progression to move up to the seniors. I am obviously delighted with my progress. On THE SUNDERLAND BOAED PRESS TALK there is also a rumor that we are swapping Henderson for him, but as the article suggests 10 mil for a future England international is worth it, and getting better than the Bent one. id pay the money and keep Hendo as well
Agree Roger, just don't think SAF does. Welbeck with Campbell and Gyan next year?? Makes the mouth water. 10 mil would be robbery.
How long is left on Welbecks contract? Does anyone know? If he is on a long term contract i just can't see Man U letting him go for 10 mil.
Now I might be a lone voice here, but I've got a slightly different pov. Welbeck has played well (after a shaky start) and we can all see the potential in the lad - but I reckon ã10m is too much. Yes, I'd want him on loan again for another season to see how he gets on in his second season before we went in with both feet. If he went back to Manure, he's not going to get many games is he? Can't see him being happy with that after a full season here, and despite what SAF may want, the lad may say thanks but "gis us a move"!? He could be one of the top English strikers in years to come however I'd prefer to see some consistency before we went in with ã10m for Manures 5th/6th rated striker?
There bye lies the problem mate. We keep him on loan another year he plays really well, his worth goes up and other teams start bidding. If the figure is correct he has to be worth a punt! ã10 mill just wages to some of the City players.
Another loan is not a good idea, as Brucie says his worth will rocket, if he goes back to Man U, Fergie could send him out to another team on loan, not good for us, outright buy 10 mil good deal, hendo for Wellie and Evans, ok also but prefer to keep Hendo and Wellie outright buy.
