With the transfer window closed and the signing of Danny Graham now complete I thought it was time to take stock and reflect on some of the negative mutterings surrounding this guy and his Newcastle connections. Those on here slagging Graham for comments he made in an interview about Sunderland have been quick to compare him with Lee Clark and Michael Chopra but Graham has never played for Newcastle yet those two have. Yeah he did make comments about Sunderland that were negative but he is a Newcastle fan and I bet everyone on here would say the same about Newcastle if asked the same questions. Remember though, once he knew Sunderland were interested he wanted to come here not anywhere else and by his own words he has come because of the manager, because we are a massive club and because of where the club wants to go in the next few years. Of course there will be concerns as to whether he will be a success and the recent experiences of Clarke and Chopra will always be at the back of our minds. However in my time as a Sunderland fan I can go back further than those and I recall us signing Bobby Moncur, Ron Guthrie, David Young and Pop Robson all from up the road and as my memory recalls they all served us well in their time with us. Then of course lets not forget the mecurial messiah Bob Stokoe and what he achieved for us. So after taking time to reflect and listen to what Danny has had to say, my message to all those self doubters is to let it go, get behind him because maybe he might just turn out to be the success at our club that was Moncur Guthrie Young and Robson
Good points Charlie, but they'll fall on deaf ears with some people. Let's see the lad do his talking on the pitch and then decide where his loyalties lie.
Give the lad a chance. He should have 5/6 games against the mags. If he scores the winner or even the equalizer what will the anti mob be saying then. Plus he has already got us a point with the "miss"in the last minute v Swansea. He can say what the hell he likes but he didn't want toscore that.
exactly he has already shown his deviousness with a deliberate miss/ he will do it again vs the mags/terrible signing of absolute stupidity/ beginning of the end for o'neill
Great post mate... The only difference is that back in the era you speak of, the internet, twitter, forums and mobile phones didn't exist. All of these mediums provide the opportunity for opinions to be amplified and spread thoughout the mind of the average football fan at a very swift pace. Hence, the hysteria around Danny Graham. I applaud the person Danny Graham, for coming to Sunderland. I sincerely hope he will make a success of himself and likewise, SAFC. I do however have reservations that some fans won't afford Danny much time to prove his worth and that is quite simply a risky position to be exposed to. My concerns are not my own philosophy on 'mags' joining SAFC, my concerns are the increasing number of fans who appear to be unable to entertain a mag joining SAFC. My concern is the potential impact of those fans in terms of their influence upon our atmosphere. Perhaps Danny Graham can be the man who puts the trust back into the hearts of the average fan? I do hope so. I hope Danny can get off to a good start. I'm sure if he put's in 110% effort, most of the fans will come to accepting him in time. Is he good enough to take us to the next level? Only time will tell. Kudos to the kid for signing up and he will have my fullest backing.
Maybe so. But we know what happened v Swansea because it ha happened, it is in the past. What happens in the future no one knows. He may scuff his shot from a yard and hit the corner flag and then again it might fly in the bag of the net. Let's all hope for the latter.
Couldn't give a **** if he scores 55,0000 goals against the scum, I'd still hate him. **** off Danny Graham, money grabbing ****ing no mark.
I firmly believe that the fans that are not prepared to give him the time of day no matter what are a very small minority who I believe consist largely of the pig ignorant and mentally challenged..
I have also done some reflection regarding Graham and likewise, I think the lad has spoken well and sacrificed a fair bit to rush this deal through. I'm going to hope this lad restores my faith in signing mags and that he is more Stokoe than Clark. I know 99% of Sunderland fans, now if is here and signed, will also get behind him. FTM
Whatever you feel MR Raw . It is clearly the height of stupidity on o'neills behalf to sign such a divisive figure as DG Danny Graham Devious Geordie
Perhaps Danny has saw the light? How do you know, or how are you able to prove that he hasn't? I have a sneaky feeling that Danny will come to love SAFC, a bit like a gentleman caught between two beautiful ladies. I know, not the perfect metaphor bearing in mind that we are making reference to nufc here, but good enough nonetheless.
One thing is for certain. If he is booed he won't be successful here do sure bye that means that the club suffer and that's bad for everyone. Whatever reservations many of up had the lad is here now so we have to support him and the club. If he changes perceptions by being a cracking player for us, both on and off the pitch, then he will exorcise the spectres of Chopra and Clark and lead to him enjoying a good time at the club. It's entirely down to him now.
I was going to say you need professional help, I think its beyond that now though. Do us all a favour and go play on a motorway. To the op. Good post, I reckon he will do very well here, we have 2 hard working goal scorers in the team. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.
