Michael Laudrup has denied the rumours but the Press today are reporting that Sunderland want to compete with Norwich for Danny's signature. It seems their problem is, they cannot afford to bid until they receive the next (or final) instalment from Aston Villa on Darren Bent's transfer. Unluckily for them, Bent has to play three more games before that clause can be activated and Lambert doesn't look like selecting him any time soon. It makes you wonder if that is the reason for Lambert ignoring him. Bent is a proven goal scorer at this level and Villa are struggling right now. If it were me, I'd give him a run of a few games because he is well capable of getting the goals to take Villa out of trouble. Still, that's their problem. As for Danny, I'd keep him. He's been struggling but every striker goes through a lean spell. That said, I am hoping that we go for a good quality striker in January because that's one piece of the jigsaw that I believe will see us finish in the top ten.
Was thinking to myself earlier, what area needs strengthening?.. Then started to think what position doesn't need strengthening. This I find is the easier to answer. Midfield and wingers are the only positions I find where we have adequate cover. The rest could all use the extra strength in depth imo.
Why are clubs thinking they are competing for DG's signature? Is he being shopped around. Do clubs think that because he is not playing that they might be able to dangle a carrot and pry him lose. We have a number of players for the lone striker role: DG, Schecktar, Moore, Lita ..... and the one player who is actually scoring in that role - Michu - is not on that list because he's primarily a midfield player; makes you wonder what the other guys think they are up to. None of the list strikes me with terror when I see them on the team sheet, so as far as I'm concerned they are all candidates for upgrade. If we're shopping him around then let's try and get crazy money for him - maybe 'Pool have enough silly money left that they'd like to donate to our cause. I am hopeful that with another pool of cash coming that Laudrup can pick the pocket of another European club and find us somebody with superb technical skills that can mesh well with others on the team and be a clinical finisher in front of goal ..... if it's one thing I can safely say about DG is that he's not exactly clinical in front of goal and for a tall guy his heading ability is abysmal.
The point is this Ivor! Does he fit into Laudrup's plans????? The rest of your comment I concur with completely........... PS: And more importantly does he fit into our quicker and more clinical offencive game this season? Don't think so....
Well as far as im concerned DG has done fine for us, sure he aint clinical and agree that his heading is appauling but for the money we paid he is decent enough, seems a decent bloke as well which is good for team spirit, he is also english which will be a factor with our team if we are not careful so i would not sell him in January, if we end up struggling goals will be important and he has proved he can score at this level giving enough chances, even if it meant tailoring our system to help him he would still be a valuable asset. There is alot to play for this season,Sunderland are looking at him for 2 reasons. 1- he will score goals. 2- they buy him it makes us weaker and we could be in with sunderland in a relegation scrap come the end of the season, with less potential goals in the side than them! Its exactly what Wolves tried to do with signing De vries from us last year, make your rivals weaker and it makes it harder for them to stay up and therefore easier for your own team!! I buy into this logic greatly in the prem league. It back fired on Wolves of course.. Dont forget that Danny was banging them in preseaon and Laudrup was tsalking about 15-20 goals from him !! so lets not think that he isnt rated, its more to do with us accomadating Michu than DG being off the boil, it was the same when Gylfi was here, Danny's goals started drying up . We must keep the strongest squad possible right now, unless there is a stellar signing coming in January i see no reason to even entertain selling last seasons top scorer
I don't advocate moving him for the sake of moving him. On the contrary, only if we have somebody already lined-up for the upgrade, would I move him on and then only to finance the other trade. As for the list he is probably still at the top of it, but I think Schek and Moore could give him a run for effectiveness in our current lineup.
I would rather move Lita and Moore on.. but if ML thinks its for the best then so be it. He is yet to steer us wrong, although I just dont get Moore. He must be amazing on the training pitch. I thought that with BR he had his favs and that was why he was always on the bench, but if ML thinks he has something well in ML I trust.
The thing is, of Moore, Lita and Danny, I think that Moore is by far the most technically accomplished which would endear him to Laudrup. If we could harness Danny's work rate, Lita's strength and Moore's technical ability into one, we would have a hell of a player. Discounting Schechter, who I think will be released, we do need three strikers at this level. I would keep Danny and Moore as back up for a new striker and sell Lita. It is true that ML was bragging Danny up pre season and I know that Danny is performing in training, so quite why these rumours are flying about now, I don't know. ML is experienced enough to know that you don't ditch a player going through a bad spell. All players have them and the market would be flooded with surplus strikers if they were ditched as soon as the goals dried up. Even Rooney had a period when he couldn't buy a goal. I'm not saying that Danny is the answer because I would be quite disappointed if we didn't buy a quality striker in January. But I am saying that he's worth keeping until the end of the season when we'll have a better idea of what we can afford for the following year.
lets cut to the chase shall we...If we have to rely on Danny then we would not be where we are and more closer to qpr. Danny is a nice lad and all that but he is not good enough to rely on to get our goals and Sir Mike obviously thinks the same.....If a club comes in for him then we should think about selling him and if not then send him out on loan anyway. If i was him i would consider returning to the championship where he plies his skills better and is more suited...
Funnily enough Dai, I seem to remember he did quite well last season, scoring a pretty decent amount of goals for us.
Danny has to be shipped out. We need some better players to come in next month, as we're now fighting for top 4 place not fighting to avoid bottom 3. In case you haven't noticed, we're now a top team. The likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chalsea are starting to fade, and teams like us, Everton, Spurs are vying to take over. Get used to the good times.
Then why ship him out?! All the big teams have a good squad rotation and backup. By all means let's get another striker in, but what would be the point selling one of our best strikers! Sorry dgswan, but I really don't see the logic there.
Neither do I. We know Danny gives us work rate every game and he is too good a player for his goals to dry up completely. He will come good again because his 14 goals last season showed us he can do it. That said, I still think we need the addition of a high quality striker in January.
