Daniel Agger speaks of Liverpool frustration

Daniel Agger has told the Danish press of his frustration at not playing in some of Liverpool's key games but says he is not currently thinking about his future.

Centre-back Agger struggled to hold on to a regular starting role at Anfield this season and was left on the substitutes' bench for the crucial Premier League fixtures against Manchester City and Chelsea last month.

Quoted by Ekstra Bladet in his native Denmark, Agger has now admitted that he does not appear to be rated highly enough by boss Brendan Rodgers and stressed that he does not want to be considered as just a back-up option.

Asked how it felt to miss out on the games against Chelsea and City, Agger is quoted as saying: "It definitely wasn't great. But I don't make the decisions. I think it is because the manager doesn't think that I'm good enough."

Questioned on whether he would be at Liverpool next season, Agger added: "I don't know. That's up to the manager. I can't go and put myself on the team sheet."

Agger started 16 Premier League games last season and made substitute appearances in four more fixtures.

Asked if he could live with being third choice in the Liverpool hierarchy, the 29-year-old said: "No, I'm no one's third choice."

Agger joined Liverpool from Brondby in January 2006 in a £6million deal. He signed a long-term contract extension at the club in October 2012.

  3. Right now, it's got to be Skrtel and Agger IMO but all depends on what CBs (if any) we sign and sell.

    Agger started 16 games.
    Sakho 17.
    Toure 15.

Pretty even. Agger and Sakho both had spells out injured, which is mainly why they were dropped.

Agger has no case to moan about.

Nice that you cleared your head and finally came back with an answer <ok>.

I think that because Sakho is our most expensive defender and because he was probably picked by BR, BR will unfortunately tend to favour him.

  8. I said the exact same thing during our last discussion <doh>

Sakho is the future for us but right now he is a squad player IMO. If we can buy a quality leader (vocally) then I see no reason why it couldn't be Sakho and the new guy.

TBH, I don't think any combination of our CBs makes for a good pairing but they all have qualities individually.

Along with Toure, Agger spent the most games on the bench when fit and was overlooked in that crucial stretch. And the fact that Toure got any starts at all before Agger is pretty unjustifiable imo.

  11. Toure played a few games at RB at the start of the season. He was also part of the opening games were we got three clean sheets in a row where it was a Agger and Toure partnership.

It's a shame - I do wish Agger gets a big move to Barca or someone like that because he deserves it.

I would have preferred Toure as the RCB with either Agger/Sakho on the left. I know people sh*t themselves whenever Toure's back in the team but it's about balance and partnership - for example, Agger has been poor individually but our defence as a whole has been far more solid with him in (most of our clean sheets have come when he's started).

Sakho is our future and he's had a good first season IMO, and it would have been great had injuries not ruled him out. Annoys me when people judge him on his awkward stance.

I'm a fan of a fully fit Agger he's a superb defender, but he's never fit and because of this he's in and out of the team.

Our defence is a big concern Agger is always injured Skrtel would be ok but as long as he has a controller with him a Hyypia type, Sakho just doesn't look good enough but see my reason for Skrtel, Toure too old the rest too young.

I would like us to sell Agger Toure and Skrtel and bring in 2 center backs with the rest as back up.

Of our current CBs Skrtel is the only one who has made the position his and deserves to start every game (assuming he keeps form up).

Agger and Sakho are very different but currently contribute about the same to the team in different ways. Its hard to pick one or the other- but Sakho will most likely improve- Agger is probably as good as he will get... so if we had to lose one it would be he... great servant to the club that he has been.

Be a shame to see Agger go, clearly committed to the club, has a good attitude, has sleeves, listens to death metal. He's a better option than the calamitous Toure and isn't an own goal machine like Skrtel. Then Sakho wasn't the same since his come back. Reckon it's a level playing field between the three of them (Toure heading out or being brought in only in times of crisis) for one starting spot at CB alongside the top top quality CB that comes in this window.

My problem with Skrtel is his ability to also be a liability. We've all discussed his 'Hands On' approach to defending and quite a few times we've been extremely lucky that referees have not seen his WWE style. He also has a tendency to stick himself and wave a leg out at shots which have gone from being safe saveable shots to own goals (Last game a Newcastle Skrts stuck a leg out on a cross that could have been dealt with in a better way). Whether this is down to him not listening to the GK, Mings not making himself clear or an over commitment by Skrtel, but it is a problem.

I would have liked to see Agger and Sakho paired at least once this season.

Wouldn't be mouthing if I was any of our defenders after this year.........I'd have the head down.

Love Agger but we are a football team not a heath spa. You want guaranteed (almost) first start position then you've got to be physically available more than half a season at a time......if not accept you are part of a pool of players...

    Whinge? Then **** off.

    I'd rather release Toure tbh.

We need someone new and I don't think 4 first-team quality CBs is too much.

Skrtel (now), New Centreback (now), Sakho (already good and for the future), Agger (dedicated and a team leader)

I think if we're in a slump- Agger is the type of player I'd want on the field for his leadership. If we're up against a physical team- Sakho and Skrtel are players I'd want on the field.

If it's a team we expect to dominate- I'd want Skrtel and Agger on because- Skrtel can provide occasional goals and Agger can help in movement towards other teams.

Were we to park the bus (Rodgers won't)- I think I'd want Sakho and Agger- because Skrtel, as people pointed out- can be a liability when under pressure for too long.

A lot of combinations though- a new Centre Back (And we do need one... one that is better than those above) would replace one of the above.
