Getting some new furniture for the house & discovered a bit of mold on the wall, the wall was damp & the paint had started to come away.

What can I do to stop the mold from coming back?

I need new windows fitting but the ****s are trying to get £6k for the whole house so I need a short term fix.

Is there anything on whack on the walls & then paint over to stop it?

how often do you have the heating on in that room? painting it etc will just seal damp into the wall and wont help the problem. do you know where its coming from? if you take up the carpet are the floorboards damp?

LR - the windows are ****ed, the heatings on everyday at the moment as its ****ing freezing & the windows aren't getting opened.

I presume its down to condensation from the fact that the fires on producing more heat but theres no ventilation to let the air out once it gets cold meaning it causes more condensation.

As I'm at work I'm trusting the mrs to keep the room ventialted most of the time so was wondering if replastering the walls or special damp proff plaster would also be a good idea or a waste of money.

would you consider buying a dehumidifiyer as a temporary solution? it'll probably cost you £150 but its easier than replastering especially if you've got a wean. you need to get the wall dry in the mean time, even if it's a day with the windows open and plug in heater facing the wall. the plaster being damp is only a drama once its been going on for ages and has knackered the plaster board

The mrs was on about those dehumidifiers before Christmas, haven't a clue what they do as I tend to ignore the ****e she comes out with.

I've got a plug in heater already & obviously a fire in there so plenty of heat in the room.

Painted the room in the summer & the walls were very cold even then. I applied plaster to the bits where plaster had broken but not to the whole wall & painted on top of it with a few coats & its been fine till now.

Dehumidifier will draw the moisture from the offending area, hopefully.

a dehumidifiyer works the opposite way to air con and just condenses water out of the air (you can always ebay it once you get your new windows <ok>), we had damp a while back but it was just because we didnt really have heating on in a 2nd bedroom so easy enough to fix. i'm not sure how good damp proof plaster etc is but if you're repairing the plaster just make sure you remove the damp right into the good plaster before resealing.

if the condensation is on the walls then there is likely no insulation in them and changing the windows wont help much. either get the walls insulated or use a dehumidifier and leave a gap between the wet wall and the furniture to allow for good air flow. if the fire is flueless gas or parafin that could be the cause of the condensation.

damp **** plaster wont work if its condensation causing the problem.

    Cheers lads <ok>

Will I need to stick the dehumidifier right next to the damp wall to do it?

Or does it simply suck all the wet air in & blow hot air out to increase the hot air flow in the entire room?

it just draws the air through it and removes moisture, it doesnt really work like a heater. you dont really need to sit it next to the wall or anything just make sure the door is shut when its in the room and running <ok>

The problem area is a bay window which now has a chest of drawers with the tele on top because of the stupid layout of the room. I've just had to move a bigger chest of drawers there to make way for the wardrobe thats coming this week so har to get too much ventilation behind there.

Struggling to think where I can even stick the dehumidfier actually <laugh>

Will get the heater behind there tonight to warm up the walls & have the window open a wee bit till I get a dehumdifier.

    What insurance?

The mrs never leaves the ****ing house & any **** brave enough to break in with her there & get away with anything without getting battered deserves my dvd player for being a double hard bastard <ok>

She also has ocd so she checks very ****ing plug is off before we go to bed!!! So no fires when we're sleeping, a few times she's been tempted to turn the fridge/freezer off too as I tease how she lets that plug stay in but no the tele.

women are mental. my mrs is the same with switching stuff off but cites the environment instead (earth's big enough to look after itself in my book), however she likes to leave the hall light on all night <doh>
