Daily Thread 28th June

Discussion in 'Horse Racing' started by The Chosen One, Jun 27, 2011.

  1. Not sure what the script is with creating the Daily Thread, however, if im overstepping the mark then please feel free to recreate and cut and past my selections, which for the record are as follows:

One that takes my eye tomorrow is available at an early price of 10/1 runs in the 3.00 Brighton is the Gary Moore trained KAVACHI dropping down the ratings at a fast rate of knots and runs off a very tempting rating of 70 tomorrow, having run in much better company and won off a mark as high as 86 in Class 2 Handicap Company, with the booking of talented Jockey George Baker and a drop to Class 5 Company for the first time in 4 years i think if he runs to the best of his ability he is well in and could get back to winning ways, either ways I think he is a very attractive EW proposition. :emoticon-0149-no::emoticon-0149-no:

Another one I have just picked up on is the Arthur Scargil trained SILENT APPLAUSE who is available at very attractive odds of 14/1 and runs in the 4.00 Brighton he gets in off a rating of 61 and has won and been placed off a mark as high as 70, the last time he ran off a mark as low as this he won in similar company that is on show today at Epsom, and i fancy him to run a nice race and go very close, whilst the EW bet isnt an attractive option due to the lack of 8 runners, i do feel that if he runs to his abililty he is more than capable of making the frame and will be having a confident EW bet.

Good luck to anyone who plays today :emoticon-0100-smile

    3:00-Mandhooma 9/2 BOG

Hold up Mare who has gained all her 6 career victorys here between 5 and 7f.The most recent one coming a fortnight ago. This is the furthest she has ever been but she does love it here and at 9/2 is worth taking a chance on.

    4:00-Achalas 6/4 BOG

Stayed on very strongly to win over 1m4f in a Kempton Handicap last month and ran exactly the same race at Windsor last week to win agan.6LB penalty for that win here does make things a little tough but his running style means there may still be more improvement to come.

    5:00-Konstantin E/W 15/2 BOG

Gelded over the winter and much improved since,Winning at Leicester on seasonal debut and has been placed both starts since,Running as if to suggest that a return to 7f is what he is crying out for.

    also done a Konstantin/Mandooba E/W Double

    Southwell 6.00 - Vociferous - 1pt 5/2 BOG

A potentially informative maiden in which we have a few sorts that I like as Southwell types on breeding. Rano Pano is very interesting, because she is by Proud Citizen and she has experience on the board. Proud Citizen is a good dirt sire and I like him as a Southwell sire and this filly comes from the in-form yard of Brian Ellison. I expect to see her improve.

Fresa is interesting as she is out of a Southwell winning mare who was listed class in her day, she also represents a yard who do very well with their juveniles and they do send out winners at Southwell. She could easily be good enough to win a maiden at Southwell, however this race could be a bit above the average.

Vociferous is a fascinating runner for the Mark Johnston yard, she is by a good US dirt sire in Street Cry and she is out of a rather good mare called Sander Camillo who won the Cherry Hinton. She is brilliantly bred for this sort of surface, her damline is US dirt and her sire is also a dirt specialist, making her of obvious interest at this track. The yard love sending this sort of horse to Southwell and I think she could easily be a cut above this grade.

Southwell 6.30 - Flying Pickets - This horse is by one of my favourite Southwell sires in Piccolo, who for me is the best non US sire for the course. The horse has form to overturn with Pint Size but I think Flying Pickets is more likely to run a race on this surface. 0.5pt EW 10/1 BOG

Nassau, I must admit that Vociferous flew off the page at me. As you say is a daughter of the top class racemare, Sander Camillo, and as she is also by Street Cry has to be one of the best bred horses in training. However, with a pedigree like that why is old boy Johnston aiming her initially at a class 5 maiden on Southwell Sands??? Is it (a) because he sees it as an ideal starting point or (b) because she is not very good and he’s targeting her at a very weak race to get a win on the board (and therefore boast her paddock value)??? I know her likes the track but a filly with this pedigree and the profile of tonights race just do not logically match. This area of doubt puts me off here and it’s a ‘no bet’ one for me today.

Interestingly, re the dam Sander Camillo. Does anyone know (a) why she was called this and (b) why this name led to her then owner having a hissy fit and dispatching the mare to the sales??? Fascinatng tale attached to this.

Wasn't it owned by Robert Ogden? If I recall he named horses after some of his lady friends at the time and I am guessing that he broke up with her and his other lady friend made him get rid of her? Then Ferguson purchased her for 3million+ and put her to stud.

As for why she is starting at Southwell, I think this is two fold -

1 - its an easy race and to get a win on the board for the filly would be great for her future at stud
2 - winning at Southwell would make her a prospect for the US dirt, and on breeding she could make a good US dirt horse if they decided to go that route

Ok guys, here's one owed to Ron who mentioned on another thread of hitting a long priced runner at Catterick. Boom, Catterick is on today. I saw that someone mentioned Excelette in the first. I've had a good look at the vids. The two better drawn runners with a shout are the afore mentioned horse and See Clearly, drawn mid field. But I really liked the look of Excellete.

Spot on, old boy. Sander Camillo (who was about 40 years younger than Sir Robert) was one of said ‘lady friends’ and when their relationship ended he binned the filly named after her as well! I always remember one day when Sander Camillo ran (the equine one that is) and Thommo was quite enchanted by her (the human one that is)! There relationship though always reminded me of the classic Mrs Merton line to Debbie McGhee ‘What first attracted you to the multi-millionaire, Paul Daniels’! However, the old rogue must have reformed and be treading the old ‘straight and narrow’ as he now has horses in training with Mr Henderson.

Back to the racing you are probably right and I hope she wins. But just have this nagging doubt that is keeping my loot in my pocket...

No nap today but will do a R/F in the 3:00 at Brighton: Phluke and Ivory Lace (both veterans, but seem to run well at Brighton?).

14.30 Brighton Athakeel. Won over course and distance last time out and in the past I've managed to catch a couple over a series of wins on this track - so that's the scientific reasoning behind my pick.....
