Very tough day to kick off Glorious Goodwood, but some good quality racing nonetheless. I'll have a go: 2.00 Goodwood: FAREER 18/1 e.w- This is a horse that has been kept to some very competitive racing and does possess a lot of ability. I thought the horse shaped with an abundent amount of promise at York in a listed handicap, finding absolutely no gaps and running on late to be 3L 8th of 20. On that run you would have to say trying a step up to 10f would be worth experimenting with, and as it is a horse that tends to travel smoothly, I think it might be a move that works well. Ed Dunlop has never had a winner at Goodwood but does have 8 placed efforts from just 16 runners, and Fareer might just be worth chancing in what is a muddling looking handicap with the market focussing on Modun and All Action, both of whom are promising but both of whom don't fill me with confidence. 2.35 Goodwood: YASEER 20/1 e.w- Fell short of high hopes in the Dante when last of 6 behind Carlton House, but before that was a staying on third in the Craven Stakes won by Native Khan. The step up to 10f now on his second try should hopefully yeald some better results and having been given a 75 day break by Marcus Tregoning, you would hope he would be freshened up ready for a late summer campaign having been deemed not up to the Derby standard. This is a very tough race and undoubtedly Yaseer has something to prove, but he is still unexposed and for me rates the value selection based on a) The pretty decent form he has shown and b) The fact he should improve for this trip having been given a break. 3.10 Goodwood: BALTHAZAAR'S GIFT 16/1 e.w- For me this is a high class horse with all the ability to win races such as this, particularly with a race run to suit. This is his perfect trip (ran on late in Group 1 Golden Jubilee and July Cup races over 6f), but a strongly run race is pretty crucial to his chances. We should get this, in the sense that we have Libranno, Red Jazz are both front runners and especially with Libranno being more of a 6f horse. If the horse settles well and retains his ability then I believe he will be a serious threat, having ran very well here the last two seasons. 3.45 Goodwood: BURWAAZ 11/1 e.w- Looked the unlucky horse at Royal Ascot when well clear on the near side and a running on fourth overall, just behind Crown Dependency. He disappointed at Newmarket next time out, but he won't be the first to do so at Newmarket and I'm backing him to bounce back and go close at what seems a pretty fair price. 4.20 Goodwood: WARCROWN 9/4- Richard Fahey reckons this is his best 2 Y O and if he shows that ability on debut he will be very hard to beat. This price will collapse tomorrow I think. Fahey did say that they won't be going full tilt on him but he does think an awful lot of this one and rates it as his bet of the week (interview available on Sporting Life website http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/...ME=racing/11/07/25/manual_144101.html&BID=465) 4.50 Goodwood: GUEST BOOK 12/1 (NAP) Returns from a break with the yard in excellent form of his excellent second at Sandown earlier this year has worked out teriffically well. De Sousa gets up for the first time so he will get maximum assistance in the saddle this time. 5.25 Goodwood: ROCKET ROB 10/1- Returned to form last 3 starts, shaping well. With luck in a running and a well-timed ride, he should go pretty close here. Is a smart sprinter on his day and it seems he is prominent in the betting, which is important having been massive prices when out of form earlier in the season. Will be involved today I feel.
Thanks for kicking this off early TC. Fascinating review with some nice priced selections, going against what looks like a day for favourites. Good luck with those. My selections are pretty boring in comparison and I don't have any sound reasoning behind them. I'm hoping that Requinto will be a bit too speedy over this fast 5f (Looks the best bet for me ew at 5/1 with B365) and I've gone against your interesting newcomer with Sequola. Beverley 2.10 Croquembouche 3.20 Toto Skyllachy 5.05 Kingsdale Orion (nap) Goodwood 2.00 Modun 2.35 Fiorente 3.10 Strong Suit 3.45 Requinto (nb) Looks a solid ew bet at 5/1 (B365) 4.20 Sequola
Hey Ron thanks mate, I quite enjoy doing the write-ups. It does look a day for favourites on paper but I do feel there is value to be had, whether they will win or not I'm not sure but I think there is definite place value in some of these. Fiorente is rightly favourite but there are one or two others that make me wonder if 11/10 is really what I'd want to be taking. Modun concerns me with that no show on penultimate start. I do think Sequola looks a threat to the Fahey newcomer too. Especially the form of the Hills yard.
Thanks Top Class At Goodwood today and that usually means a day of agony on the betting front (great day for racing and the crowds aren't stupid on the Tuesday). If Fiorente is half as good as they say he is then the Gordon must be his. I'll also be taking an interest in Modun for a quickfire Ballymacoll double. But my three for the day are: Delegator 3.10Gd Charles the Great 3.45Gd Guest Book 4.50G and my outsider of the day is the well named Larwood (4.15G), probably E-W. To any one else there today I'm the bloke in the Panama.
Morning all 2.00 Goodwood : MODUN (WIN) FORTE DEI MARMI (E.W) 7/2 and 11/1 (BOG) – A good race to start off Glorious Goodwood for which Modun is set to start favourite, ever since making a mockery of his handicap mark of 84 at Newbury back in April this horse has been talked up to be group horse in the making and an entry in the Irish St Leger would suggest he is held in high regard by his trainer Sir Michael Stoute. Therefore it came as a surprise when Modun flopped badly at Ascot last month, however the soft ground may have been a valid excuse and he soon proved that run to be all wrong when chasing home Green Destiny at York 17 days ago, considering that horse is also talked up to be group class, and is many punters idea of the best bet of the week at this meeting ,it is obvious to see Modun performed with great promise last time out and for me he is actually value this morning at 7/2. My second selection in the race Forte Dei Marmi has been out of sorts lately but for me he has always been the type to do well in these big field handicaps in which he can get plenty of cover before delivering a late staying on challenge, he isn’t obviously well treated off a mark of 108 but if returning to anywhere near his best I would fancy him to run on in to a place this afternoon under Fallon. 2.35 Goodwood : FIORENTE (WIN) HUNTERS LIGHT (E.W) 11/10 AND 12/1 (BOG)- I am very hopeful that Fiorente can land this race for Sir Michael Stoute, after only three career starts this colt has achieved a rating of 106 and has to be open to plenty of improvement. After getting off the mark at the second time of asking at Newbury he managed to finish 2nd in a group 2 behind subsequent King George winner Nathaniel at Royal Ascot. He was given a strange ride that day and still looked green when staying on very nicely behind a top class rival that got first run. Many will believe he is too short at 11-10 but for me that is a decent bet considering he could be a top class horse. I have backed Hunters Light as an E.W bet as he is a horse I have a lot of time for and looks to be progressing nicely, this is a key race for him as this will tell us how good he actually is as that is totally unknown at the moment, he sprinted right away from a 99 rated horse on his reappearance and despite performing with credit when midfield at Ascot after that (Slumber 3rd) I can’t help thinking that was not his true running, he confirmed himself as a horse with plenty of class when picking up a listed contest at Hamilton 12 days ago, if this doesn’t come too soon I would be hopeful that he can run in to a place. 3.10 Goodwood : DELEGATOR (WIN) 3/1 (BOG) – For me this is a poor renewal of the Lennox stakes and it looks between Delegator and Strong Suit. Delegator has to carry a penalty here but I am still going to stick with him, he is a horse I have always liked and it is obvious he has lots of class and with the ground description currently reading GOOD I am hopeful Delegator can deliver his trademark late turn of foot over this easy 7f which should be perfect for him. Strong Suit is an obvious danger, as his recent performances would suggest he has bounced right back to his best form following a successful breathing operation. He landed the Jersey stakes at Ascot before running a fine third in a group 1 at Chantilly last time out behind the unbeaten Mutual Trust and finishing just behind Zoffany who had previously got close to Frankel in the St James’s Palace Stakes.
Thanks for the DT TC, omg, wtf, where are the commas? When it comes to the favourites at Goodwood today TC, I tend to agree. The fields just are so open, the harder I look, the more difficult the program seems. So I thought I'd stick with one that has shown flashed of class in the past, Delegator. His run in the July Cup was full of merit, he didn't get the best of runs, then thundered home. I think a few bookies might be up grading their cars after Goodwood is done and dusted. 15:10 Goodwood. Delegator.
Morning Everyone Agree that the favourites look good today (well on paper anyway), but as we know it does not always turn out that way. I agree with ron about Requinto and that one will be a confident bet for me today, other fancies : 2.00 Goodwood Our Joe Mac (Win) 9/1 (BOG) 4.50 Goodwood Master Mylo (Eway) 10/1 (BOG) Cheers Trevez
Top: Great write up mate Like the look of Forte De Mei and All Action in the first with Mr Cumanis being a trend horse! I have taken 33s about Gunner Lindley in the hope that he has his required ground for the first time this season but this really has to be his last chance Very good racing today on the Sussex Downs but i like to use day one as a fact finding mission for ground and the way races are run. Does any course find trouble in running as often as here!! Guest Book from Mark Johnston's yard is the other one i have backed at 14s EW with Billys. Good Luck all who play today
EW Lucky 15 for me today on the following: 1400 - All Action 1435 - Fiorente 1510 - Red Jazz 1545 - Stonefield Flyer Red Jazz would be the only one that is sort of a shot in the dark, but I'm kinda superstitious when it comes to racing and my grandad always said bet on the horse with Red in the name. So very scientific that one Good luck all x
Acually something else I'm superstitious about is I never tell anyone who I've bet on.... so I hope posting on here doesn't bite me on the behind!!
Well mine turned out to be a stinker yesterday. Agree with Gem today - Stonefield Flyer 3.45 Good Ran a very respectable 2nd to Fredrick Engels (sp?!) at Ascot before being given a run out in a poor race LTO for the experience. Will be a tough ask but hopefully it can lead them over the line today. Currently 17/2 on berfair and 8/1 on b365. A small cover on the place at 2/1 (berfair)
Local trainer Amanda Perrett teams up with an underrated jockey (Pat Dobbs) today and they have a fine record at Goodwood. I have taken a small EW bet at 33s on Blue Surf in the 420, this team are more than capable of getting a FTO winner especially at their 'home' course.
Morning all Gary I spent a wee while on that first race last night and the one I like is Paul Cole's runner Circumvent with Richard Hughes in the plate. Circumvent was a shock 40/1 winner of a decent Newmarket handicap this time last year off a mark of 103 before going on to run in the Gordon Stakes (well beaten behind Rebel Soldier). He was up with the pace that day before weakening in the final 2F and I don't think he got the 12F. He was then dropped in trip but probably didn't enjoy the juice in the ground behind Vesuve at Donny and Credit Swap in the Cambridgeshire. He has had a gentle introduction this season, not being knocked about in 3 races and I think he may have been laid out for this. The handicapper has given him a real chane by dropping him to 99 and with Hughes in the plate I fancy him to go close at a nice price. 2.00 Goodwood Circumvent (NAP) Good luck to everyone
Top thanks for the thread. Going with three bets today at Goodward. 2.00 All Action 2.35 Fiorente 3.10 Red Jazz Good luck and heres to a good days racing and hoping all the horses get round safe
Morning all, great day for English cricket yesterday beating the world number ones convincingly means our national team is on the up, shame they dont get the same hype as the football team who are consistant also rans. Anyway on todays racing, thanks for the thread and write up Toppy some nice calls there and I see we agree with Balthazaars Gift who is thrown in at a nice price and may just have needed the run LTO, after just failing to get a run last year when running on, with regular jockey Peter Robinson on board again if he gets a clear run today he may get up, other selections for today: 2:00 Kings Gambit 14/1 EW NB 2:35 Moriarty 22/1 EW 3:10 Balthazaars Gift 18/1 EW 3:45 Requinto 9/2 WIN NAP 4.20 Larwood 20/1 EW 4.50 Suited And Booted 16/1 EW 5.25 Arganil 14/1 EW Good luck to all who play today .
Oddy: Best of luck mate, i used to back Circumvent every run but leave him alone now, will cheer him home for you mate if he comes with a lte rattle Wayward: Cannot believe Philip Robinson has been jocked off today by an ex England goalkeeper Paul New key board required again!! Spat coffee too many times mate
Odddog - I have followed this horse all season, seen it backed which got my hopes up only for everytime to see it not even go close. I have decided today to stop following it, so today may well be the day. My frustration should it win will be eased by at least knowing a fellow 606'er had a good return on it, good luck.
