Talk about history repeating it looks like the David Norris/Gareth MaCauley scenario all over again. Don't you just love this management at our club! "I know lets buy a player for £2.6 Million on a 3 year contract but don't bother to renegotiate his contract until after he has any resale value!" http://www.twtd.co.uk/news.php?storyid=20583&title=jewell_wants_quick_decision_from_leadbitter
It happens to the best of clubs, if the players dont want to sign/ get offered better deals elsewhere what can the club do? Ideally you would offer all players a new contract with 2 years left on their deals and put them up for sell if it gets down to the stage of only having 18 left (ie if negotiations are unsuccessful after the first 6 months) but players form and a clubs requirements can change dramatically over such a short space of time. A year later you may be stuck with a player that you no longer want. A lot of contracts are only for two years anyway so chances are you will start the season with first team players who will not be contracted past the end of the season. My problem isnt so much that we can lose such players due to freedom of contract but more that we very rarely seem to take advantage of the bosmans available. Who was the last player signed on a free whilst still at the peak of their career? - I can only think of Neil Alexander.
I think he has had a poor season but prior to that i thought he was one of our better players but if he goes so be it..
