We need a CB but £5m is too much! Thats the kind of money id like to see us spend on getting a better, more reliable version of Vaughan! Reading are supposedly offering that for Defoe! Id love us to try that! I know hes getting on a bit but you cant argue with his goal return!

But you can argue his wages!

I think 5 mil is a little high for a club like norwich, but were in the big time now and will have to start forking out fees like this sooner or later!

I totally disagree Bedford. I personally think £5m for a 27 year old CB, now coming into his prime and who could be a rock at the heart of our defence for several years isn't bad business at all, especially when you consider Villa paid £10m for him a few season ago.

He had a superb season last year by all accounts and it definitely premiership quality so I'd love to sign him, even for £5m.

We have some spare cash because out two signings to date were tribunal only and will be pretty cheep. £5m sounds a lot but we have to do something we cannot live forever in the bargain basement.

£5m is nothing for a decent footballer. these days, sadly - although it is a lot of money for NCFC.
But if we intend to remain in the top tier of English football, these are the sort of prices we'll have to get used yo paying to enable it to happen, I'm afraid. The 'undiscovered gems' from lower leagues thing was never going to last forever although it worked a dream for us under Lambert <ok>

With the possibility of upsetting Carrabuh, there seems to be a general opinion that we will have to start paying larger transfer fees and possibly higher wages from now on.
My reservation is that apart from the obvious chance of debt occurring, the risk you take in higher fees. A manager might consider a player is too good to miss and worth anything between £5-10M and buys him. Sooner or later, and maybe one more than one occasion, he will get it wrong, they all do. The big clubs can afford to make a few mistakes but we can't.
Its a very narrow line between success and failure and fingers crossed CH has good judgement and good luck.

There is a risk ratio I guess, if we stay, I mean when we stay in the Pl for the next two seasons, sky and BT income is £110m This is before other revenue streams, spending a few pennies might be a wise move. I'm not advocating chancing our arm in order to stay up, but a few players over the next two seaons in the range of £5-8m each is realistic.

But if he establishes himself in the premiership and shows his quality - which I think he really might - then in a couple of years he might be worth £10m+

Just a couple of weeks ago we thought we were going to have to go shopping to replace Grant Holt so now we can use that money elsewhere to strengthen the team. I personally don't think he'd be a massive gamble, he has played in the top flight before and obviously has quality and the ability to make the step up or Hootun wouldn't be interested - let's go get him! <ok>

The £5m may well be pure speculation and a total based on appearances/performance etc. I would be surprised if it will be a £5m cash up front deal. I think he can walk away for nothing next season so Brum can either realise his value, get two or three other players of Championship quality in to bolster their threadbare squad or keep hold of him and have him for a season but then have their financial problems compounded by this time next season.

If we need a decent player in the prime of his career rather than a young prospect then we are going to have to pay some bigger fees. Much as I would love it to be the case I doubt we will be able to continue unearthing hidden gems from the lower leagues for £2m - £3m.

we can't be completely risk free - we need to gamble a little one or two players without breaking the bank, otherwise we will go down for sure
    i hope we get him

The words ' truth ' and ' Daily Mail ' should not appear in the same sentence.

agree with munky and norfolkbhoy (assuming that's allowed now). i bet we won't be paying it all up front if the report is true. it'd be more like half up front, the rest will be performance related

Can someone update the forum rules please?

I'm getting confused with all the new ones- maximum height requirements, nationality requirements, agreeing and controversial-ness rules. My head's spinning!
