Proper British food is a Curry. Which are your favourites? Do you like a hot one? Where's the best takeaway in ULL, the bestest restraunt Do you make a mean curry yourself? Poppadom, Sir?
Lamb Chilli Naga pretty hot. Emon spice lounge in Brough does a decent curry, the staff are all from Bradford and drive over every day - everything is freshly prepared on the day, never had anything bad from them. Edit - I had several Christmas cards off them last year, not that I use it regularly
Bengal Lounge is decent, never had a bad curry there. For a takeaway I always use Cottingham Tandoori. I like a Beef Madras if it's done properly, otherwise I'll go for a chicken tikka balti (especially if I'm in Newcastle, anything hotter and it just tastes like burning). I don't mind mild dishes either, Murg Masala is decent if the ingredients are fresh.
The thought of fish curry...eurrggh not for me. I'm off to a curry house in Grimsby Friday night. I used to like a hot Curry, can still eat one now just cant cope with the fall out...
Like most that involve chicken. Sometimes beef. Reasonably hot is my preference, not so its burning my mouth lining out, so usually a madras. Me dad got me to try his Phal when I was in my mid 30s. Felt like I was eating fresh lava. ****y waiter when I asked him for water cos me mouth was on fire, pointed at the fire extinguisher, laughed, and ****ed off. The **** him. Do like a proper jalfrezi too. Almost all curries, if made using decent and fresh ingredients are fab. Naan, onion bahjis and saag paneer. Mug of tea and some scraps. Lovely.
I can't say Saag Aloo without following it up with 'push pineapple, shake a tree'. Which can be embarrassing when ordering in restaurants. I usually just get bindi bhaji instead.
I went in an Indian restaurant in derby after the play offs and after the meal came they brought what I though was a large mint on a plate! Then the waiter poured hot water on it and it unravelled into a hot hand towel! I was pissed and amazed!
Oh ****!!! Lime pickle is a taste explosion. It kind of overworks the tastebuds and then you want more. And another Poppadom.
I used to enjoy a really hot curry & have chucked a few phaals down the hatch over the years. I stupidly won a chilli eating competition in a curry house in Wilmslow a couple of years back. Not big or clever. Nowadays I prefer chucking stuff on a few poppadoms & usually follow it up with something different off the house speciality menu. A Jinga Joll or Murug Podina are a couple worth trying if you're ever in Sandbach & visit The Ganges.
Saag paneer for me On the lime pickle debate, I place a tea-spoon of lime pickle on the pop (or pup as some might spell it), then add a splash of raita and a dollop of mango chutney to finish. The onion stuff: just a dollop of raita per bite.
The "Indian" curries you get in the UK are not authentic. I have had proper "Indian" curries in Pakistan, Nepal, Malaysia and Cambodia. Similarly the Chinese food in the UK is rather derivative in my opinion.
