Bristol City's revised contract for Nathan Baker, possible Robins sales and what comes next
Robins now have to sell to further add to their squad this summer - here's a look at who could pull in a tidy sum, what we expect to happen this window and why.

Bristol City must sell players if they are to reinforce any further in this transfer window, as Nigel Pearson has confirmed.

The Robins manager spoke to the media at the end of last week to explain the recruitment situation at Ashton Gate, with the City boss having said previously that he ideally would like a forward to come into BS3 this summer.

Pearson spoke to BBC Radio Bristol and further clarified on his plans this summer, having already brought in midfielders Andy King and Matty James, as well as defender Rob Atkinson to add to the returning Nathan Baker.

City are still expected to look for a striker late in the window.

"To get three players back this summer is really positive," explained Pearson. "Both Andi and Danny, we wanted to keep them anyway.

"Nathan is a real bonus for us because the circumstances for him coming back have been really positive. The fact that he was one of a number of players who we as a club had made a decision in terms of how we [run] the wage structure, how we want to move forward given the circumstances that football's in...

"And to be fair to Nathan, he's been really, really positive and we've been able to renegotiate a deal with him that's better for us as a club and it's more incentive-based. I think that's a really good sign that he's so positive about being back here.

"It's important that we get the right people here, I'd made my mind up at the end of last season that we needed lots of change.

"Not necessarily because people are bad people, it needs freshening up. We need to create an identity. I don't think we had a positive one last season," said Pearson.

Pearson went on to say that he wanted more experience to come into the squad this summer and that he is happy with the work that has happened behind the scenes so far.

There is a possibility of more incomings but it will be balanced with sales.

"We'll only add further if there are outgoings now. Or if there is a deal to be done that we as a club feel is the right thing to do," added Pearson.

"I'm not going to add players for the sake of it, and we're also mindful of keeping the club in a healthy financial situation.

"My intention this window, and I think I've made it pretty clear from day one, has been to stabilise the squad and make it more solid through the middle," he said.

The loan market has not been ruled out either and Pearson reiterated to Bristol Live last Friday that for a striker to arrive there would have to be a sale given that forward players can be expensive.

The Robins do have attacking duo Chris Martin and Andi Weimann back from injury, who will add to Pearson's options, but we still expect the club to bring in one further forward player before the end of the window.

Pearson was in charge of Derby County back in 2016 when he allowed Martin to leave the Rams, later hinting that he wanted a centre-forward with more pace in attack.

Martin joined Fulham on loan back then, going on to hit 10 goals in 30 games for the Cottagers across the 2016/17 season. And while Pearson may possibly see the 32-year-old in a different light now, the club has lost the athletic prowess of Famara Diedhiou and are short of powerful, aerially-adroit forward players.

That change of contract for Baker and the need to sell players first shows where things lie. The pandemic, and a lack of crowds last season, has now caught up with the club. Finance is not forthcoming.

So who might be at risk to go?

City do have sellable assets and the Robins will have to weigh up any interest that comes in for any of the following, who might all fetch decent fees:

    Dan Bentley
City's player of the season for 2020/21 and surely a player who could attract Premier League interest, with several sides scouting him at Ashton Gate last season. Max O'Leary was given match action at the end of last season as Pearson assessed.

    Tomas Kalas
The club captain was mysteriously left out of the matchday squad for the final game of last season against Brentford following a training ground incident. A good showing at Euro 2020 will have increased Kalas' value and profile however. Has it caught attention from elsewhere?

    Adam Nagy
The Hungarian box-to-box man is another who enhanced his reputation at Euro 2020. Given that Pearson has brought in two players that he knows in central midfield, will there now be players to depart from the middle?

    Han-Noah Massengo

The Frenchman is still only 20 and was one of the most-used teenagers in the Championship last season. Though yet to nail down a first-team place and fully blossom at Ashton Gate, he has room to develop and get better yet. Here or elsewhere.

    Antoine Semenyo

Linked with Crystal Palace towards the end of last season but that was when Roy Hodgson was manager. There may yet be further interest in the versatile forward this window who enjoyed a breakthrough season last year and shows the raw talent to progress further yet.

I reckon we're being 'softened' up for the sale of Kalas.

Wouldn't be a shock or any softening up involved for me. I would be more shocked if it doesn't happen, but who knows?, if it does happen I can't imagine it being a huge fee, expect a loss 4 to 7mil at best I suspect.

Because he was worth it at that time, covid has meant that the arse has dropped out of the market, even for mid to lower prem teams and they know it, they also know we need the money to buy, they also know that if he or any player wants to go, that they now have all of the power in the modern game and can hold clubs to ransom.

Who knows I might be wrong and he is happy, the next month or so will answer that question.

I would like to see him stay but the personal relationship may scupper those thoughts. Should he leave then we just have to move on and see who else comes through the door to replace him.

Not that old chesnut?, it's largely bullshit, Morrell barely got a game and the majority of Smith's games were off of the bench.
