NOBBY SOLANO today urged Newcastle United’s new foreign legion to make a name for themselves and write a new chapter in Geordie folklore in the Wear-Tyne derby this Saturday, insisting: “There is no greater feeling than sinking Sunderland in a black-and-white shirt.”
Solano rolled home the winner in the explosive clash back in 2003 with the Magpies on flight to a Champions League place under Sir Bobby Robson.

Now Solano is hoping that stars like Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye and Gabriel Obertan can make their mark in the Saturday lunchtime encounter.

Solano told the Chronicle in an exclusive interview: “They will quickly know if they can score that they are representing the fans because they will become a hero overnight.
“I am sure that the local lads like Steve Harper, Steven Taylor and Shola Ameobi will be reminding all of the new lads what it means to the city.
“I cherish my goal against Sunderland even now and I also managed to score against them in pre-season so I know the feeling is great.
“It’s a good feeling because you can bring the supporters so much joy and unlike usually, that feeling lasts for months not days because the bragging rights also come into to it in a derby game.”

“These are special games and tough games as well.
Both teams started with good results against Liverpool and Arsenal but this will be different and it is whoever starts the game with the right intentions.”

One of the concerns from Toon fans in the aftermath of the clash with Arsenal last Saturday was the lack of goal threat. However, Nobby has backed Sunderland slayer Shola Ameobi and Demba Ba to come good on the big day.

He said: “I know everybody would like to see a No 9 and see some money spent. But Shola is a very strong boy and if you get the deliveries to him right, he can score goals. Demba is also a player who can score goals so there is enough about Newcastle to make life tough for Sunderland. I am confident if Newcastle get the service right to the two strikers it can be a great result and a day to remember for us.”

Victory or even a draw for Newcastle would mark a positive start to the season for the Magpies.

Solano was part of the squad that lost 2-1 to Sunderland in 1999 – the game that sealed the fate of Ruud Gullit.

And Solano says: “It’s only the beginning of the season but defeat wouldn’t be the end of the world. The new boys are settling in and there is a long way to go. But hopefully Newcastle can emerge with the right result and then really push on for the rest of the season.”

Solano is also enjoying his Indian Summer in football at Victoria Park and at 36 still loves the English game.

“It’s great to still be playing and training at Hartlepool. This might be my last year but we’ll see. The aim this year is to finish in the top six and take things from there.
When the fixture don’t clash though I will be at St James’ Park watching and hoping to see Newcastle get wins on the board.
It would be fantastic if they do that on Saturday at the Stadium of Light and I will be keeping an eye on the score for sure.”

Nobby was such a great player for us.

Good to see him urging the new boys on and re-iterating how important this match is to the fans.

That'd be a Question of Sport Question in 100 years - obviously Sue Barker will still be presenting it.
