These two seem to be in limbo, with both their loans been cut short and having played for two clubs already this season it appears the only football they are going to get until next august is in the cup, reserves or by somehow forcing their way into the first team squad. Devitt was supposed to be going to a scottish club this week, but the deal fell through as he'd played for us in the macclesfield game in the cup. However i saw in today's hdm that Cullen scored a hat trick against a sheff wed side yesterday in a behind closed doors game that Adebola, Oli and Simpson also played in. Seeing him play in the reserves a fair bit you can't deny hes a decent finisher and when he was given that extended run in the first team last season by Pearson the team wasn't going through a great patch. Have most people given up on him making an impact in the first team? Similarly I know there is quite a divide of people who rate or rubbish Devitt and he has the added problem of competing with Brady, Stewart, Macca and Garc, but the lad is clearly technically gifted. Its just a shame it looks like a light breeze would knock him over.
ok i am a cullen fan based on watching him in a lot of reserve matches, but i still believe he has a good future and will be a goalscoring striker. devitt, as i have always said, is fourth division at best!
I agree, though i'm not sure if Cullen's good future is with us. He might have to drop a division or two and do it the hard way as i can't see him getting a run in the team anytime soon, Crawley is probably his best chance but that's only a one off game.
Judging by a lot of previous posts isn't the problem that both players are literally light weight and should bulk up to improve their games?
Devitt needs to bulk up or speed up or both. With a bit of pace Devitt could be a really handy player but as it is he's slow and lightweight therefore easy to knock off the ball. Cullen needs a bit more of a brain and some glasses so he can stay onside but technically is rather good but could do with bulking up a bit and that bit of pace because as such a tiny little chap his main threat is going to be getting behind a defence rather than powering his was through or something along the lines. Both good players but really need to work on their physique if they are ever to make it at this level.
in cullens case i think his only problem was a little imaturity (he was 17 or 18 though remember). He s had a stinking injury run for the pasy 8 - 12 months but i am sure that Nicky Barmby can help him if he gets games somewhere. (Hull City or other). Its not a good analogy I know but when he plays he reminds me of a lesser Michael Owen in his style of play
These 2 need to go back out on loan imo. Neither are good enough to get into the current squad, so they may as well get game time elsewhere in the hope they can develop.
Cullen has to keep banging the goals in for the reserves and hope he gets a chance. Neither can go on loan to another club for the rest of the season (unless its back to where they went before). Not sure Devitt has a long term future with us though.
As has already been mentioned, Devitt has already played for us and Bradford, so can now only play for us or them, unless he goes to another league. Cullen can go out on loan again and I assume he will.
Loan spell being "cut short" implies players are sent back. These were just loans that came to an end. Shame for both as they really need games. Cullen was unlucky with his injury which ruined his spell. Seems he got a hat-trick for a reserve side yesterday. Hope both get some football but don't think either will make it here.
Cullen clearly has talent but everything has come at the wrong time for him; being thrown into last year's first team with inflated expectations, getting injured on his Bury debut and missing most of the season didn't help either. I'd agree with that. They both need to go back out on loan if possible, particularly Cullen who I do still have high hopes for.
I remember a story about Phil Brown flying to Dublin or something to persuade Devitt to come back!? Wasnt he home sick or something? The few times I've seen Devitt he bottles it and looks lost amongst the big boys, Cullen I've a bit more time for. We arent great on that front so I'd def give Cullen a shout in the cup if need be.
I seem to remember Cullen being the only striker worse than Folan at being caught offside. If he can get that sorted then he could become reasonable, although I reckon he needs a lengthy injury-free run with a League 1 club first.
This whole offside business is nonsense. Folan was a ****e striker and was always offside, Fryatt is one of our best strikers and is always offside, Cullen is an unproven but talented striker and is always offside. The common factor with those players is that they are players who try to get in behind and score, that's why they're always offside. The likes of McLean or Adebola aren't going to be offside as much because they don't go running in behind as much. Being the type of player that Cullen is, it's worth being offside 3 or 4 times if you then go through and score on the 5th.
Thing is with Cullen is that he's arrogant, he thought he had made it with us when we were in the Prem. Although saying that the lad can finish and is always likely to score goals. He only needs to have a decent spell in League 1 and we could have a striker worth a few millin on our hands. He's still only 20ish so he has plenty of time left in the game. Devitt is a decent player, bit lightweight but I can't see him playing any higher than League 1. Although depending on how he develops he might play for a bottom half Championship side.
There's nothing to suggest that he will anytime soon but every time I've seen him, he looks like a striker than can score goals. Granted though apart from the little we saw of him in the league last year and in the Prem, it's only ever been at reserve team level which isn't a great standard
Exactly - everyone has their own opinion but my opinion is that he will never be good enough for Hull City whilst we are in the top two divisions
