Set me thinking...........which former/present TOON stars would you have loved to put on this excellent wage/reward basis............

    here's my starter for 5*

Duncan Ferguson...........jeez his doctor must have ran out of sick-notes
Smithy...........signed as a striker..........£4million a year for no EPL goals
    Xisco.............don't even start me
    Owen....................Fergie had right idea........why couldn't Fat Freddie?
    Dyer.............shin splint king of EPL........been on £80,000 a week since 2007!

    Over to you lads............

Woodgate should just give up now imo. His body obviously just isn't built for football and never has been.

SAF is a great manager, but he killed Alan Smith by trying to be a defensive midfielder, but i never knew you bought him to be a striker, good at leeds, then like i said SAF ruined him imo.

2007/8 pre-season friendly at Sampdoria he played up front with his old mate Vuduka...............clearly things progressed quickly when everyone realised we'd have to settle for him in midfield...........

injuries have left him useless and on a 5 year deal @ £4million a year!!!

I remember seeing Woodgate in his first game for us and thought he was brilliant. Terrible pity that he was so injury prone, he could have gone on to be anything.

Did Woodgate's problems start after he wrestled Hasslebank off the ball on the touchline against Chelski?

When he played he was class and IMO the best defender at the time (when we had him) in the EPL. Its just his injuries!!!!!!

If he had stayed fit all his career I reckon he would have been a starting England CB for a fair few years.

Woodgate was top class. Him and Ferdinand were going to be a magnificent partnership for England. Both read the game, had pace and a will to win. Terry was great under Mourinho but I honestly think he would have struggled if Woody had been fit.

When I saw "woody on pay as play", I was thinking "not another thread willing us to sign a guy who is finished", to go with Hargreaves, Bellamy, J Cole. I just can't get my head round why people are willing us to sign these guys. People seem to think it's a no lose to sign them on pay as you play. Of course it isn't for a variety of reasons. I don't want us to take any more risks with injury prone players, we've taken enough in over the last two seasons.

Players I'd like to have seen pay as you play - Dyer, Viduka, Dumas, Marcelino, Owen, Shola, there's many many more. We just love a bit of charity.

^Shola! Good shout, think of the money we'd have saved this past 14 years.

I'm not a Shola fan, but at least we have seen him on the pitch.

Hope I haven't opened too big a can of worms with that.

How could you put Wor Shola in with sick note?.............you should be ashamed...............he might be lazy, lacking in pace but he's local and he stuffs the scum!

Sorry but being local only takes you so far. Shola has been masquerading as a PL striker for far too long! How that lad just keeps getting contracts is beyond me. Obviously I love him twice a season because he always does the business. Also it is hilarious that such a guff striker has a complete hoodoo over them! However his inability to make an effort and constant injury problems make him a prime candidate for pay as you play in my book.

Is Owen sick note? I don't have any issue with the little fella. We knew he was injury prone when we bought him (despite any brochures that may or may not have been available at the time), so why we expected himto then manage 40 games a season is beyond me.

If Woodgate hadn't been injury prone he'd have been England captain. Best English defender i've ever seen play.

Also Dyer on pay as you play... he played 250 times for us!

Dyer averaged something like 24 games a season in his time with us. That figure includes sub appearances. Given he was on astronomical wages, we played 50 odd games a season and he played the majority of his 190 apps in his early days, he was defo a pay as you play candidate when his contract was renewed! Put it this way, towards the end I'm pretty sure he went something like 2 years without a league goal, such was the irregularity with which he managed to take to the field.

Again like Woodgate, but for his injury troubles, could have been an England regular. Oh how we regret not taking the 20m off Inter Milan though. Would have hated at the time, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I wish him well but I'm glad we have dodged that bullet. I'd be surprised if he managed more than 5-10 games.
