I would be interested in the views of our Welsh brethren about the Welsh identity in cricket. Both Scotland and Ireland have their own national cricket sides [indeed Ireland of course beat England in the World Cup!] but Wales remains dissolved within the England Set-up; the ECB being of course the England and Wales Cricket Board. With the 1st Test between England and Sri Lanka starting on Thursday - IN CARDIFF - do any of you welsh cricket fans crave for a Wales Cricket team, independent from Lords? Scotland play in the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition so could a Wales team follow suit as a stepping stone to growing into an international side that could enter qualifiers for World cups? How would such a set-up start out? Could Glamorgan simply change their name to Wales and employ only players eligible to play nationally for the side? If they set up separately how would you feel about having a fixture of Glamorgan v Wales in the CB40? Being English (and a cricket fan) I've nothing particularly against the current status quo but I can't help feeling that if I came from the other side of the Severn I would, perhaps look enviously at the likes of Scotland and Ireland when they play and wish the same for my country. What do you think [the views of non-welshmen are also welcome!]
