I'm sure alwaysright will tell me all about it when he gets home...lol First game I've missed this season...but don't worry people...normal service will resume next Saturday. That's all.
Oi - you're barred from games from now on!!! In the more chronologically mature days of my life I have started to look forward to away games not only as a vehicle to meet up with mostly relatively newly found friends with a mutual interest, but also to enjoy some of the increasing numbers of different ales that are now finding their way into those pubs that have not closed down. So part of the part of the pre-match planning is with regard to suitable local hostelries. This week (27th September to 8th October) is Cask Ale Week, and certain pubs will accept a voucher for a free pint, which voucher can be obtained by signing up on the freedrinkpubs website - that's as much help as you're going to get, and as much as you should need - and the nearest participating pub in Crewe was a 15 minute walk from the ground. But it was worth it. We had factored the time into the plan, a couple there still leaving us enough time to meet alwaysright closer to the ground for a greeting and a final pre-match pint, and I was delighted that even that pub was serving real ale. So the day was already not looking too bad, and a healthy feeling of distancing oneself from the reality that was surely awaiting us was beginning to kick in. That's when something strange happened. For all the doom and gloom that had preceded the match, Gills really looked up for this one, even looking almost worryingly enthusiastic at the end of the warm up, and again when they came out for the match. So now the conditionals regarding my viewing experience of Gills this season. On the basis of one previous match I can't honestly say whether we were just much better than in recent matches and made Crewe look that poor, or whether Crewe were just woeful anyway. Our apparently often bypassed midfield had the run of the game to themselves much of the time, Charlie Lee in particular was outstanding, but everyone played a part. Crewe were restricted to mostly long range efforts, one of which was probably just about heading for the top left corner before Nelson made a blinding one handed full save at full stretch. But Crewe really didn't offer anything, and when it got to 2-0 I was actually beginning to feel comfortable about the result for the first time in a very long time - I certainly never felt that way at any match I saw last season. So, maybe, hopefully we have turned a corner. I still have reservations about out ability to score goals when it really matters - there were some shots that were taken that frankly never stood a chance of getting anywhere near the goals, and just seemed to be taken to beef up the 'shots' stats. However their keeper also made a couple of respectable saves. One swallow doesn't make a summer, but at least that's the L1 duck broken, and hopefully its onwards to mid table security from here.
Didn't see that result coming but well pleased Hope it kick-starts our season and we begin to pick up points more regularly. As for you brb, next game you go to, if we lose, consider yourself banned sine-die
