Remember my physics teacher telling us that Ginger Baker was the best drummer ever.

Don't know about that, Dougie Vipond was quite good in Deacon Blue.

I've heard that Ginger Baker was the greatest drummer of all time too. Mainly from Ginger Baker.

I never liked him as a drummer and interviews with him left me feeling that he was both incredibly arrogant about his own abilities and successes and at the same time insulting and derogatory about almost all of his counterparts. The only people he had any respect for were old heroin riddled jazz drummers he grew up listening to.

An absolute legend no doubt but I never liked him or his style.

I'd have said Luke Goss but that's probably an age thing.

He was one of the all time great drummers. Anybody who knows music and/or drumming will tell you that.

He was also a nasty ****. Rude, arrogant, bad tempered...etc..

I know music and I know drumming and I don't need to be told. Baker wouldn't make a top 100 let alone a top 10 list of drummers for me but because of how monumentally huge and influential Cream and other bands he was in have become he's achieved legendary status. Can't knock him for it though, fusing jazz with rock helped Cream's sound and there is every chance they wouldn't have been as successful with a straight ahead 4 on the floor drummer.

He was a bona fide twat by all accounts but I've heard the same said about Clapton and look how revered he is. Being good doesn't mean you have to be nice I suppose.

His arrogance was probably a mask to hide his low self esteem, quite a common trait with addicts. Alternatively, he may just have been an 'orrible ****.

If you didn't like his drumming, you are pretty much forfeiting the right to hold an opinion on any musician, ever.

    Utter nonsense.

You clearly know less than you think about music. Baker was one of the all time greatest drummers, and I’m including him in the same category as Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa.

Nothing like quashing opinion with your own eh? I don't think Beyoncé can hold a tune in a bucket but she is one of the most successful recording artistes of recent times. Does she care that I think she has a very weak and reedy voice compared to her contemporaries? Does she f.uck. Does the fact that she doesn't care mean I am not allowed an opinion? Most certainly not. Opinions are like kids and farts, we all have them but can only stand our own.

I don't know how anyone has the nerve to include Ginge in the same breath as Rich or Krupa. I have forgotten more than you know about music, personal tastes aside I have an encyclopaedic (spellcheck) appreciation and understanding of music across an eclectic range of styles and genres.

I might as well f.uck you all off and state (again) that Keith Moon was sh.it an' all. Before you all gallop on your high horses to the nearest mortified keyboard I may remind you that even Pete Townsend said Moon wasn't much cop. As with Ginge, Moon was utterly suited to his band, clicked with the other members so much so that Daltrey couldn't work with Kenney Jones who was arguably a more technically proficient drummer than Moon. You can't take away his personality either, not everyone behind the kit can be a showman but he pulled it off. I just think his fills sounded like throwing a snare down the stairs.

I have a degree in music from LCoM.

It’s not just my opinion. Yours is a distinct minority view of Baker, who is widely accepted as one of the very best.

Seemingly, we’ll never agree on this. I’ll leave it there.
