Pompey have enjoyed a bright start to the League One campaign, but that takes a back seat this evening.

Danny Cowley’s side make the short trip across to Sussex to face Crawley in their opening group match in the Papa John’s Trophy (7.45pm kick-off).

And if you have a feeling of déjà vu, that is perhaps understandable – this will be the fourth time the sides have met in the competition in the space of just six years.

The Blues have won all three of those previous meetings, including a 1-0 success at Broadfield Stadium en route to winning the silverware in the 2018/19 campaign.

Crawley have been making headlines off the pitch after being taken over by cryptocurrency investors WAGMI United at the end of last term.

They appointed Arsenal U23s coach Kevin Betsy as manager over the summer, but it has been a difficult start to the League Two season.

The Red Devils are still searching for their first win, having taken two points from their opening six matches, including Saturday’s 1-1 draw with bottom side Rochdale.

But they have enjoyed success in the Carabao Cup, stunning top-flight Fulham last week to book a place in round three.

In the event of a draw after 90 minutes, both sides will collect a point. A penalty shoot-out will then be held, with the winners earning a bonus point.

    TEAM NEWS
Danny Cowley is likely to ring the changes and has already revealed that some academy players will be involved in the squad.

It is too early for Jayden Reid to be considered after returning from a hamstring injury, while Louis Thompson (leg) is sidelined.

Half time score is 1-0 to Crawley, with a dubious penalty for a soft 'foul' in the box by Joe Pigott.. Penalty put away by Dom Telford in the 8th minute.

In the 16th minute Crawley player Ben Wells was booked for fouling Jay Mingi from behind.

I am watching the game on iFollow. At times we are playing some nice football, with Jay Mingi controlling our midfield, but poor first half performances from Denver Hume and Joe Morrell.

I can see Dane Scarlett coming on in the second half, and causing havoc !

Bugger, poor pen from him. Following Kane on the weekend in not scoring his pen.

Final score 2-2, with Crawley winning 6-5 on penalties.

At half time Pompey replaced Denver Hume and Joe Morrell with subs Kieron Freeman and Tom Lowery. Joe Pigott was booked for "diving" in the 57th minute - what an utter joke !!

In the 61st minute, Pompey brought on Dane Scarlett and Owen Dale for Ronan Curtis and Michael Jacobs. We equalised in the 74th minute with a header from skipper Clark Robertson from a corner kick.

In the 77th minute Pompey brought on Academy youngster Adam Payce for Zak Swanson. Pompey went 1-2 up in the 81st minute with a lovely goal with a shot on the turn from Dane Scarlett.

In the 90 + 5th minute of the game, Crawley were awarded a second extremely dubious penalty, with a Crawley player going down in the area after a soft challenge from Haji Minoga. Bremang put away the penalty to make the final score 2-2.

Crawley went on to win the penalty shoot out 6-5. Both sides receive 1 point for the draw, and Crawley receive an extra point for winning the penalty shoot out.
