SCOTLAND keeper Craig Gordon is desperate to return to first-team action with Sunderland.
The former Hearts skipper has not figured for the Black Cats in over a year due to knee problems but hopes to complete his comeback in what seems destined to be his last season on Wearside.
Gordon’s Sunderland contract expires this summer and although he has yet to open talks with manager Martin O’Neill about his future he is just happy to be fighting fit again.
Gordon, 29, said: “Things are a lot more positive than they have been for a long time. I’m back training and being available for games is the first step towards playing for the first team.
“Now that I’m back out there and getting a good amount of training and a few reserve games under my belt I’m in a good position to look forward to the rest of the season and hopefully get a game before the end. That has to be my aim.
“It’s difficult. It seems like an eternity ago now that I got the injury. It’s just nice to be able to go out there and compete and know my knee is good enough to do that.”
