Scientists have discovered a gene that more than doubles the risk of becoming severely ill with Covid.

Researchers from the Medical University of Bialystok in Poland found that the gene is the fourth most important factor determining how seriously a person suffers from Covid, after age, weight and gender.

The new study mirrors findings published in November by researchers at Oxford University.

They identified the gene responsible for doubling the risk of respiratory failure from Covid, called LZTFL1.

The LZTFL1 gene is present in 60 per cent of South Asians and allows the virus to multiply in the lungs easier.

Its prevalence in people with South Asian ancestry partly explains the excess deaths seen in some minority communities in the UK.

Australia has revoked tennis star Novak Djokovic's visa for a second time in a row over his right to remain in the country unvaccinated.

The decision by Immigration Minister Alex Hawke means Djokovic now faces being deported.

However, the 34-year-old Serbian can still launch another legal challenge to remain in the country.

The men's tennis number one was scheduled to play in the Australian Open, which begins on Monday.

"Today I exercised my power... to cancel the visa held by Mr Novak Djokovic on health and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so," the minister said in a statement.

The move also means Djokovic likely faces a three-year ban on obtaining a new Australian visa.

This is just embarrassing and petty now. Their stupid internal political chest thumping does not belong in international level sport.

All the tennis players should turn their backs on the competition.

He lied to get in and is getting what he deserves, though none of it reflects well on anyone involved.

Both Joko and the Aussie authorities have made themselves look stupid and arrogant. Shambles.

There’s no question he’s been a bit of an entitled bell but this all came about and continues due of political showboating, and I don’t think that justifies supporting politicians sticking their filthy mittens into and politicising elite level sport.

I get that there needs to be rules, but given that there seems to be no dispute that Djokovic is currently uninfected, the Aussies argument and system seems to suggest they don't feel the measures they have in place are sufficient to protect him.

Exactly this. He’s virus free, & I guess testing himself regularly.
Surely in the heirachy of controls virus free is higher than vaccinated??
What risk does he pose if he’s virus free.
It’s political posturing that defies logic - like most of what’s happened over the last 2 years tbh

The bloke knew he had been to Spain, he knew that he tested positive before he met kids. He broke the rules is three countries and instead of saying as such when he was questioned at the border he said he was medically exempt.

He had his PCR result on the 16th that was part of his defence.

This is a sports personality that has destroyed his reputation as an individual.

The political interference is proving to be correct.

He is not above the law in any country.

This isn’t about Covid anymore it’s about deception.

There are people on here who cancelled holidays because they could not go to Spain as a family because of the rules at the time. He Tested positive and went to Spain.

I don't disagree with the points you make, but I'd suggest that they show the rules are poorly structured if the aim is truly to reduce spread.
