Joey Barton had his moments, but his signing moved QPR in the wrong direction. EPA/NIGEL RODDIS
Could QPR finally be learning their transfer lessons?
This week has seen the release of various over-paid players who should never have been signed in the first place, followed up by signings of promising and coveted youngsters with potential and something to prove?
Releasing Joey Barton, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Richard Dunne, Bobby Zamora and Rio Ferdinand should be seen as the start of the club putting past mistakes behind them and with the signings of promising youngsters Ben Gladwin and Massimo Luongo beginning to move in the right direction.
The two Swindon youngsters were linked with Premier League clubs but have chosen QPR where opportunities to play will be higher and they come with a desire to pull on the hoops. They see us as a step up whereas in the past our transfer policy has seen players through the door who only view us as a payday.
That’s not to say Dunne, Barton and Zamora didn’t have their good moments at QPR, far from it. But given the choice again to sign them you could only perhaps make a decent case for Dunne. The less said about Wright-Phillips time at the club the better.
The signings of Wright-Phillips, Barton and Ferdinand epitomized all that was wrong with QPR in the last four years since Tony Fernandes took over.

Chris Ramsey has started his transfer business early (Picture: Getty Images)
His talk of running the club sensibly on taking over from the chaos that was Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone went out the window when large contracts were thrown at players past their peak and it paved the way for a culture of mercenaries and opportunists who saw QPR as one last big pay day. We tried to be something we are not.
There are still players on large contracts like Junior Hoilett, Sandro, Armand Traore and Adel Taarabt that I’d like to see moved on but we starting to clear the decks of the wrong sort and hopefully the incoming signings this week are a signal of the intent we’ll be showing this summer.
We still have plenty of work to do in building something capable of competing in the Championship, with the released players and returning loanees making the squad rather depleted, but we’ve started our business early with Chris Ramsey intent on ensuring we have it done before pre-season.
Our big mistake last year was the late nature of our transfer dealings, I felt we made decent signings but they never had a full pre-season together nor were they ever going to get the proper coaching required from Harry Redknapp and his staff.
That will certainly not be the case with Ramsey’s coaching background and a bit more structure up top with Les Ferdinand involved. We need to get back to scouting the rough diamonds and developing our own players before moving on for profit. There’s a lot of work to do still, but early signings are showing it’s a step in the right direction to what QPR should be about. More of the same please.

Early days so remains to be seen. Very encouraged by the two new signings and the clear out thus far.

It would all go t!ts up when we try to get someone like Stan Collymore out of retirement on a very lucrative zero hours contract. If we can do all our business without a typical QPR signing like my joke one then happy days!

Ramsey may not be perfect but I think he's an intelligent guy who will learn a lot. Also, he seems to have a hidden tenacious, wily side to him and I think he wants to prove himself to all his critics and former bosses. He who dares wins.
