Boss wants players approaching their peak to take City to the next level.

Steve Cotterill has targeted players in their mid-20s as the key to spark a City promotion push in the new season.

This time last year, the club stated their intentions to build a squad around a crop of talented youngsters, before Cotterill brought in a host of senior pros to propel his inherited team from relegation trouble to a comfortable mid-table finish.

Now the manager wants to acquire a collection of “middle of the roaders” who bring with them a level of professionalism that can help take City to the next level.

“I think we need to look at a few middle of the roaders here,” he told BBC Radio Bristol in an extended interview.

“There was a craving to look at players who were 18-21 and then over the year they (the Board) got used to taking in the 30-33-year-olds – but they’re alright if you bring in the right ones with enough mileage left in their legs.

“Now I want to be looking at a few 25, 26 and 27-year-olds. The reason I say that is because Bristol is a wonderful city, but when young boys come to this wonderful city and they find the nightlife and the restaurants and the bars and the clubs, it causes you a bit of a problem.

“I’d rather them be 25, 26 or 27 and married with two children! Then they can go home every night and have a nice dinner cooked for them and watch the TV. They come into training the next day and do exactly the same thing.

“Don’t get me wrong, we’d love to have some good young players coming in. But we’ve got young ones here already.”

Cotterill is adamant his desired blend of youth and experience will not hinder the progression of Academy players – providing they can prove themselves for the club’s development squad.

“We need to promote our Academy boys and get our 18-year-olds playing for the under-21s – real sink or swim football, because they will learn quickly from that,” he explained.

“For a season they might struggle. But at the end of that season, one hundred percent they will be better players and more streetwise.

“The tough ones will come through it, and those will be the ones you want in your first team squad.”

Who ever is updating our site are lazy ****s! Everything that is being posted lately was said by Cotterill in his end of season review before the Crawley game. I'll admit we have nothing interesting going on but this is all old news!
