A leaked UK government document warns that under a worst case scenario, 80 per cent of Brits could be infected with the coronavirus and half a million would die.

The document, which was leaked to the Sun newspaper, outlines “the reasonable worst case” outcome in which four fifths of the country to succumb to the virus.

“The current planning assumption is that 2-3 per cent of symptomatic cases will result in a fatality,” states the document, meaning that 500,000 would die.

A spokesman for the Department of Health and Social Care emphasized that such numbers were a worst case scenario and “this does not mean we expect it to happen.”

Earlier today, more than 300 staff members of American oil company Chevron were evacuated from a building in London’s Canary Wharf after an employee returning from an infected country reported flu symptoms.

There are currently only 13 confirmed cases of coronavirus in England, although the World Health Organization just warned countries outside of China that they were “simply not ready” for the spread of the virus.

“It can get ready very fast, but the big shift has to be in the mindset,” said Dr Bruce Aylward, the WHO’s China envoy.

For the first time, more new cases have been reported in countries outside of China than inside, with 411 inside China and 427 outside.

The WHO’s Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the sudden rise in coronavirus cases in Italy, Iran and South Korea was “deeply concerning.”


As we highlighted yesterday, despite the rapid spread of the virus in Italy, EU officials have refused to consider closing the borders.

And where does this supposed 'leaked document' come from ? If this really were released by any government then in addition to the 500,000 there would be double that number dying of fright - no responsible government would do such a thing, which you know well enough, so why is such alarmist crap being posted here ? There is, however, a touch of sanity in the second last sentence ie. the aim was to show that there are now more cases outside of China than within - but the reason for that is that the number of new cases in China is going down. The position is being monitored very carefully and the possibility of closing borders has not been ruled out by EU officials - if free movement were the holy cow which you imply then it would not be possible for the Italians to isolate whole towns and cities, with no movement in or out of them.

I don’t usually look at stuff from this poster but I couldn’t work out what you and Stroller were responding to. It’s from an extreme right wing website called Summit News, not something you stumble over by mistake, run by a sad bloke called Watson. Probably lies of course but even if it’s not the intention of publicising is simply to terrorise, destabilise, scare, create tension. The poster is a textbook alt right troll, he equally doesn’t care what kind of reaction he gets, as long as he gets a reaction, if anything the more upset he causes the better. Starving of oxygen is the only sensible response, so he’ll continue on my ignore list.

So what did Matt Hancock have to say in Parliament yesterday? Not much really, apart from that there will be a public information campaign in due course. Here's one for you, Matt - you told us yesterday how many people have already got the virus, but how about telling us how one actually gets it? I've heard a lot about how people should be careful about touching handrails, taps etc. in public areas, but I've also heard that you need to be in close contact with a carrier for as much as 15 minutes to contract the virus. Which is it? A few simple facts would be useful.

I think the thing about touching things in public places is quite normal Strolls - this would be the same for a flu epidemic. I don't know if this virus is primarily an airborne one or is transmitted more by touch - or possibly both. The question is also what constitutes 'close contact' ? Is it enough to simply be in an enclosed space with someone who has it, but is not necessarily sneezing and coughing everywhere ? I think the problem is that with so few cases up to now it's difficult to form an exact picture. Up to now there are 9 cases in Germany and in all of them the original carrier appears to have been in North Italy recently - and the others have been in close contact to them - but what exactly 'close contact' means I don't know.

With cases of coronavirus in the UK hitting 15 this week and hundreds of people being placed in isolation, many have been left wondering how best to protect themselves against the outbreak.

Schools have been closed after pupils and staff returned from ski trips in Italy, sparking fears they could have caught the killer bug and brought it back to the UK.







Hundreds of workers have also been sent home from a London office after an employee showed symptoms similar to coronavirus.

Fears over the virus has led to hand sanitisers flying off the shelves nationwide and major retailers selling out of face masks.

As many of us consider wearing the masks, especially in situations like our commute, an expert has revealed whether they will be effective in preventing you from picking up the virus.

Many of the paper options being worn do not filter out infectious air particles, and those that are not worn properly or are loose fitting will not prevent bacteria from entering your nose or mouth.

Experts have also warned that the virus can be contracted through the eyes.

Jimmy Whitworth, professor of international public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, also said there is little evidence the masks will help prevention, and are better used by those who already have the virus to prevent it spreading.

Medical professionals who come into close contact with the coronavirus will usually be wearing more heavy-duty masks, which can filter out unwanted particles and are specifically fitted to the wearer's face.


Symptoms of coronavirus include a cough, high temperature and shortness of breath - but the NHS warned that these signs do not necessarily mean you have coronavirus as they are similar to what you would experience with a cold or flu.

NHS guidelines advise people to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when they sneeze and throw tissues in the bin immediately.

Hands should be washed regularly with soap and water, using hand sanitiser gel when needed, and you should avoid close contact with anyone who is unwell.
