I thought the Coronation was magnificent. We are the only country with a monarch that still crowns our monarch with such ceremony. If we get rid of that, we've lost a thousand years of tradition. The fact that it hasn't happened for 70 years makes it even more important as it allows a generation who've never seen it for themselves a chance to have their own coronation experience.
If you paid attention to the ceremony you'll have seen that even though it adhered to that 1000 years of tradition, the current monarch also wanted it to reflect modern Britain. It emphasised that the King serves the British people, rather than the other way around, and it also reflected, perhaps more subtly, that the King does not like to see inequalities in society (despite what people think about his position and what it signifies).
As for the cost, the upper estimate is a £100 million cost to the taxpayer. When you consider that in 2017, the Royal Family are estimated by Brand Finance to have brought £2.2 billion (1.75 billion an average year) into the British Economy, that's a drop in the ocean. William and Kate's wedding brought in an estimated £1 billion so the Coronation, a bigger event, could well bring in more. The 100 million that's been spent has mostly been spent with British suppliers, who'll all be taxed on that, so it's a boost to the economy anyway.
Hope you enjoy it.I'm off to Edinburgh, on the train, for a day out. I'm not a Royalist but love our history and the two things are inextricably linked. I've just reread a book on Mary Queen of Scots and the Crown Jewels that Charles receives today were worn by her ... that's a good enough reason to go for me.
There'll be massive pomp and circumstance as well as pipe bands in the street. I wouldn't want to listen to bagpipes, at home, but there's something stirring about them in the street.
And the Red Arrows doing a display over the city, sounds canny enough.
