I was on the stands as Cornelius made his name: from unknown youngster, to topscorer, newcomer of the 2012/13 season and superliga (Danish premier leauge) player of the year. I was dismayed, as I certainly didn't expect him sold after only one season in the 1st team, well and (with my sympathies) to Cardiff... Reading his interviews in Danish media, Cornelius is frustrated about the injury hampering his start in the PL. I know Cornelius as a hard worker, a handfull for defenders, good timing in his runs to the far post (deadly headers) and a good hard left leg shot. I was wondering to hear your expectations (personally I'd say 6-10 goals 1st season) to him. I'm sure you saw all youtube clips, I won't add any, but what do you think of him; and second do you know if his fit for tomorrow?
Mikra, for me the jury is resting, I have seen the Youtube shots of Cornelius and he looks impressive. However, the premier league is a lot faster and more aggressive than most leagues so it is very difficult to comment on what we expect. Having come up from the championship and seen how we have played so far I'd be happy if Cornelius hit 6-10 goals. Currently our style is to defend and score from set plays, Cornelius will add his height to this. Much will depend on how MM decides to play once Cornelius is in the starting eleven. If he is more attack minded then I do expect more than 10 goals from our main striker. Rumour is he will be on the bench but nothing confirmed as far as I am aware.
Most of Cornelius goals came from early crosses from RB/LB, or from long shots. Only a few from set pieces. Makay will surely know how to use him well. I understand he was being scouted while Cardiff was still playing in the championship. He's Young and will improve a lot, inconsistent, but a hard worker...
EEK! Inconsistent is a worry. If he's in the box for set pieces it won't be a problem as it will give the defending team more problems, our defenders usually score from set pieces.
Your early cross comment is quite encouraging as we don't really get to the line, but from the Left especially we can get quality in early. Hes started one game in the League cup and was replaced when injured by Rudy (who is ****) and Rudy made a big difference compared to the effect Cornelius was having. That has worried me a bit but to write him off after 35mins would be hasty to say the least!
Had a chance to become an instant here in 94th minute but a tame shot easily saved by De Gea. Not had enough game time for anyone to give an opinion yet.
Yes Nin - I thought we were going to get a net buster when he was bearing down on goal with only Ferdinand (I think) between him and the keeper. Still, he got on the pitch at last and will have a lot more chances - big big lad to stick up front as an option, and he DOES look to have some pace to go with it.
A few more cameos before he gets a start. MM does seem to have faith in FC though. Can imagine 'horses for courses' in the coming weeks with Cornelius in against the more rugged defences and FC against teams that play football. As with Noone, more options for a 'plan B'.
^^^^ Cornelius v Stoke & Palace. Great to see Noone get a go. City are such a better team when playing up the pitch. A real wasted opportunity v Villa. 15 minutes to go, 0-0 and they sit on a point when Noone on could have caused some panic.
The Villa game was lost by Malky - sorry, but that's how I saw it. They were there for the taking and he didn't go for it.
Surely he should have played in Noone who was in acres of space. I thought Noone did enough to justify him starting next time out. He added a new dimension to us, did more in 15 minutes than Odem did in the previous 75. If he doesn't start he proved with out doubt he should be the first game changing option we look to off the bench. I agree with Dai that Cornelius made a great aggressive run across the front post which almost certainly created the space for Kimbo
