    Hey... If anybody's interested.

Just been at the Hull Schools football tournament at the Airco Arena this evening where Group 1 ended in controversy. The second to last game in the group saw the top 2 of the group face each other in Gillshill and Victoria Dock schools. Both teams had 6 points and Gillshill were one ahead on goal difference. The game ultimately meant Victoria Dock had to win to advance to the finals, anything less sent Gillshill through. The referee was Barry Jackson (whom some of you may remember being paraded at half time one game for his volunteering services to youth football and his worth with Hull Boys). Games were to be 8 minutes long.

The game went 2-1 to Gillshill nearing the 8th minute mark. But for some reason, the match was carried on.... and on.... and on. Victoria Dock equalised after a lapse in the Gillshill defence for 2-2. Strangely the game continued on and on and on. Victoria Dock surged forward and forward looking for a winner but the keeper kept on saving them until Gillshill went straight down the other end on a counter attack to win the game 3-2. Barry blew for the whistle as it was finally over for Victoria Dock within the already exaggerated timings.

Some of the parents up in the seating area watching on the game began to shout their anger at the lengthening time allocated to this game which continued to give Victoria Dock chance after chance to qualify when the momentum was with them. The referee ignored the shouts.

Making matters worse, the game following this only ran for probably 3-4 minutes before the whistle went for a 0-0 draw as the hiring of the room ended at 5pm. Whilst this match didn't affect anything, it only fuelled the parents complaints up in the seating area.

Parents were questioning (shouting and screaming) why Barry continued to allow the top of the table clash to continue and continue and suggested he wanted Victoria Dock to qualify and did everything possible to allow this to happen. It might be worth adding Barry was talking to some of those kids (Vicky Dock) before the game on a first name basis so clearly he knew them.

It was certainly interesting to view first hand and only adds to speculation that the best children in the city aren't being picked for Hull City and Hull Boys (instead its those "who know people in the right places").

[Before anybody asked, I'm not in anyway involved with either Gillshill or Vicky Dock schools and was there with another school witnessing that unfold. All I've written are what I saw or heard others say/do].

I remember playing for my school against south cave (I think) many years ago. The pitch must have been at a 45 degree angle! We played 20 minutes first half, us going downhill and 40 minutes second half!! This sort of thing goes on all the time! Unfortunately not enough people sign up to be refs anymore.

I couldn't believe what was happening.

The good news is the correct best team went through.

It happened to my lads a few years ago on the outdoor pitches at the KC in a football tournament. We'd done well in our first two games and our third game was against Hymers to decide who would go through (a draw sent us through on goal difference). It was 0-0 for ages and the game just went on and on (well past the ten minutes it was supposed to be). Hymers kept trying a through ball that never paid off and kept going out for a goal kick. Then in what was probably the 14th minute of the 10 minute game, they scored with the whistle blowing immediately after. I couldn't believe it. I had to then explain to my kids how well they had done without looking like a sore loser of telling them they were robbed.

<laugh> I've played on those south cave pitches for Beverley about 10-15 years ago in the Drypool league, what a f**ing shambles those pitches were.

My lad played for a couple of kids teams, under 9's at North Cave and U10's at Beverley and some of the refereeing was shocking.

Often the referee is the coach of one of the teams playing, this sounds daft but the vast majority were honest and it was rarely an issue, but some of them were absolutely appalling.

The bad one's were well known for it and I could never understand why some weren't banned from officiating.

I kept getting £10 fines for pointing out these inconsistencies, as it was the ref's who issued the fines.

In the end I stopped going and I don't know anything about that fire in Cottingham....

Probably because there's a lack of them to begin with so they didn't want to have any of their referees quitting and creating further shortages. Most refs are untouchable, look at Michael Oliver in the PL.

What makes tonight worse though is the fact it's somebody involved in the management team of Hull Boys (or Hull Schools whatever the team is now called). Our kids aren't coming through the ranks because a large majority of them are blocked off.

I've played on the pitch, we were playing a cup game, it was 3-3 in the last minute, I took a corner from the left with my right foot, the cross went straight in to win the game, and the ref gave off side. The ref was their manager, as the official ref never turned up, say no more.

Can you even be offside on a corner? The ball travels backwards when it outswings?

In 1975 I was ruled offside by the ref in a school game.

    I was 12.

I was in my own half.

I questioned the ref who was blissfully unaware that you couldn't be offside in your own half.

This was a bolt out of the blue for me.

    A paradigm moment.

The realisation that adults were not all knowing, competent, hyper-beings.

Truth be told, I've never really recovered.

I still approach strangers in pubs.

Cackling manically, spittle flying from my snarling visage, as I retell the story, emphasising the offside rule.

    As it was then.

    As it is now.

Aye similar story when i was under 11's. We were second other team were top and unbeaten. We were beating them 1-0 and their manager was ref and he played 15 minutes extra till they scored. Then blew up. Just so he could say they went through the season unbeaten.

He was also a Hull Boys Coach and a teacher at Malet. Initials AW. A w**ker. Treat me and a few out of our team like s**t when we were with City Boys.

That's awful. Your manager should have pulled you off the pitch when he realised what was happening with the added added added time.

It's only a matter of time before this starts happening to be fair. It'd be interesting to see how the officials react when they know they were stretching the rules anyways.

I remember arguing with half my school about the offside rule, it started between me and a mate who thought you could be offside from a goal kick, he ended up getting everyone we spoke to that day to back him up and they all did, including our PE teacher. The only person who knew I was right was City's very own Conor Townsend, who was in one of the junior teams at the time.
