So Henderson has turned down his contract offer of £80k/week. Add that to the what's happening with Sterling and you have to wonder whether we have not left it too late to be signing these guys on to extended contracts; we're either gunna have to pay them a lot more or sell them and rebuild (again). Chances are both will sign but I don't like the trend....Just glad that Coutinho has signed up recently....I have no idea how much a week he'll be on but Sterling and Henderson shouldn't expect to be on more.....should they?
A selection of headlines on the matter: Henderson will commit his future to the club despite delays over a new contract. .... Telegraph Henderson unhappy with Liverpool contract tactics .... tribalfootball Jordan Henderson rejects first offer ..... ibtimes HUGE Liverpool blow as crucial star snubs giant new contract .... metro Jordan Henderson insists he 'loves' Liverpool and will sign ... Incredible! Seriously, these journo's need to be measured for accuracy.....I can't believe how much BS gets to print these days!! However, the question still stands as to whether leaving the contracts this late in the day is wise and how many players in the team deserve more than Coutinho? I'll bet these two are after much bigger money!
I think Coutinho has signed on for 70K a week. This makes him an extremely rare commodity as he is worth more than this in my eyes. Sterling and Hendo prob both want 100k a week and should get it. if thats what it takes to keep them then pay it. Not like we dont have the cash now is it. If we lose though too ill be properly pissed and questioning why exactly fsg are here.
Personally I don't think we should know how much they're on and all the contract dealings being played out in the media is just wrong - whichever player or team!
I agree but in many cases, it's the players agent who's responsible.....ultimately, it's his job to create a demand for his player and drive his value up. How can that be stopped?
Nah, it's virtually impossible to stop this unless you set salary caps across Europe...or ban agents!!
Henderson and Sterling will both sign, they would be mad not to. First teamers both improved by 150% since Rodgers has come in, if they go anywhere else it might stop the progress they have had and their career might stall. It is just not worth it.
I think they will too. tbh, from what I've read, players don't really have too much to do with the whole process anyway these days....it's the agents who manage the entire thing
there are two ways for players to look at things. 1. commit to a club and they will play you, make you central and if you are good the really huge clubs will come in for you and pay the going rate. 2. don't commit and try run things down, make your agent rich by moving to another club on a free etc. the players like coutinho will end up going to real madrid anyway... they are that good. If coutinho said you know what F you LFC i aint signing what happens to him? LFc move to sell him now... before real want him and he ends up going to another club. he may not find it as good a deal or as good a role. So mr henderson cn want what he likes and so can mr sterling... the reality is barring chelea (who'd want niether) or city.... nobody else will pay them more. the fact that LFC seem to think they can make a player vice captain, make them central to their plans and have thier manager say I lost the elague cos i could not replace him then offer him what winston reid will get at est ham.... well that fact amazes me. The going rate for an england internation and vice captain is not 80k per week.... so LFC better start getting real here... as long as theres not an agent playing game no 2 above and the player just wants the going rate and just wants the right offer and get it signed... then this is all on LFC.. FFS pony up the bloody going rate.
The going rate has changed though, due to FFP. It's currently lower than previoulsy and we've been shedding our high earners since Brod took over....only Johnson and Gerrard of that era left now. The going rate will rise again as the new TV money floods in but right now, Harry Kane signed up on a £60k/week contract, are these two that much better? Maybe so....maybe it's not even relative as we'd lose another 2 years to rebuild if we had to replace them......personally, I just don't like the uncertainty heading into the last few games of the season
Harry Kane is happy cod he went from low wages to for him massive money Henderson was already on 60k I think I have heard this called dihorrea financing. The money flows in and the money flows right out again to players and agents... When lfc report commercial revenues were up 5% before we talk cl money etc last year etc etc etc why would a player care what the club can or can't do when they consider themselves a key first team player and think hey as such I should be paid properly
Whichever way you view this, we should have tied these guys down over a year ago. Both would have happily accepted offers then. While I don't want to be held to ransom, I appreciate that it's the way the industry works......it's the bit about it being avoidable that I don't like
Didn't Gerrard say it was the delay in renewing his contract that made him consider leaving? I fully understand not being held to ransom when buying a player but keeping the ones happy that you've already got is another matter entirely.
sure. that is true. if lfc had treated him like a god he'd have signed. "if lfc dare treat me like john terry i am off" attitude. watching gerrard this year i feel he spat the dummy. he was not meritorious of a new deal before may let alone one in january cos he's not been good and falling off the cliff in performance terms. its his choice to go and not imo to do with others new deals.... i would say........ yes we should probably have tied up henderson last summer BUT the reality is even now.. he can ask what he wants but until someone actually bids on him... well.... only city i reckon would want him 18 months left is obviously soething that should have been dealt with last year. sterling is different nad is about the right time but for me summer is the time for this not mid season
Our wages are now 56% of our revenue - back under Hicks and Gillette, we were at 70+% which was scary considering we had lost CL revenue but still had big wages. We've done incredibly well to get back to an acceptable level. It would be a shame to waste those savings on 2 players (who are good btw) but still have a lot to learn and develop.
Gerrard's performance is dropping off but surely that's to be expected and why BR was moving him into a different role. I'm sure you'll agree him saying he gave up national duty to play more for his club didn't ever mean the club bought into that. But his contract and every other players contract dealings should be well in hand and not left to drift on which is what seems to be happening, is the transfer committee also doing the contract talks because they seem equally ineffective.
