Things are a bit quiet here so it's high time I courted controversy with a suggestion to change the way some-thing is done. This time I decided to revamp the playoffs. Instead of simple semi finals and final, this proposal is to make it into a mini league. Firstly, make a table from the results between the four sides in their league fixtures from the season. Each team then plays each other one more time. As a reward for being 3rd and 4th (4th and 5th in League Two) you get 2 home games and 1 away. The results are added to the existing mini-league and the winners get promoted. We could even go a step further and have a one-off game between 2nd and the team a place above the relegation zone in the higher division! Here's how it would have looked this season. The tables are how things stand before the extra games: Championship 1...Swansea ....... Pld 6 GD +1 Pts 12 2...N.Forest ........ Pld 6 GD +3 Pts 10 3...Reading .........Pld 6 GD -1 Pts 6 4...Cardiff City .....Pld 6 GD -3 Pts 5 Fixtures: Swansea v Cardiff Reading v Forest Forest v Swansea Cardiff v Reading Swansea v Reading Cardiff v Forest Winners up. 2nd play 17th in Prem for a place in the Prem Xxx League One 1ââ¬Â¦ Bournemouth ââ¬Â¦ 6 . +3 . 9 2ââ¬Â¦ Huddersfield ââ¬Â¦. 6 . +3 . 9 3ââ¬Â¦ Peterborough ââ¬Â¦. 6 . -2 . 8 4ââ¬Â¦ MK Dons ââ¬Â¦ ââ¬Â¦. 6 . -4 . 6 Fixtures: Huddersfield v Peterborough MK Dons v Bournemouth Bournemouth v Huddersfield Peterborough v MK Dons Huddersfield v MK Dons Peterborough v Bournemouth Winners up 2nd play Doncaster for a place in the Championship Xxx League Two 1ââ¬Â¦ Torquay ââ¬Â¦ ââ¬Â¦ 6 . +3 . 9 2ââ¬Â¦ Accrington ..... 6 . 0 . .9 3ââ¬Â¦ Shrewsbury ââ¬Â¦ 6 . -2 . 9 4ââ¬Â¦ Stevenage .. ââ¬Â¦ 6 . -4 . 3 Fixtures: Shrewsbury v Accrington Stevenage v Torquay Torquay v Shrewsbury Accrington v Stevenage Shrewsbury v Stevenage Accrington v Torquay Winners up. 2nd play Walsall for a place in League One Xxx Let the argument - I mean discussion ââ¬â commence
(quote) Instead of simple semi finals and final, ---------------------------------------------------------- No thanks to your overcomplicated mess - let's keep it SIMPLE !
Yeah that is way to complicated, i don't think there is anything wrong with how it is. Maybe it is a bit unfair on teams such as Huddersfield who have finished 16 points above Bournemouth and may find themselves still in league one next season, but i think that makes it even more exciting, the playoffs are a lottery. Maybe introducing away goals could add something. Watching the playoff games at the moment only makes me wish Pompey were in them, great atmosphere and so much excitement, would hate for them to be changed or got rid of!
CANT. HANDLE. TOO. MUCH. CONTROVERSY! But on a non controversial note, the mini league idea could work, and would be rather darned exciting. However, the 17th team in the prem idea doesnt quite work. What should happen is that 17th does play 2nd in that mini league, but if they lose they fall to the conference and each league gets an extra promotion place. As Mark Lawrenson once said on PES, "This could be controversial"
What about a system where all the teams play each other, home and away, and it's 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss and no more? The top three teams get promotion and the bottom 3 go down.
I know it's a bit revolutionary, but what about giving the first 3 clubs an automatic promotion. I mean, isnt that what the whole seasons about?
The play offs are a joke the sooner they bring automatic promotion to the 3rd place team the better. But alas its all about money so it wont happen. Also, make the Champions league a Champions league where the Champions of each Country play in. They could then have a Runners up league and 3rd place league and a 4th place league.
Devon - I posted my slightly controvertial idea on the Saints board (scrap goal difference and go to Italian/Spanish style head-to-head record) and got taken apart! I'd better keep my even more controversial plans to myself. I like the idea of including the 17th/16th place Prem team in the play-offs though.
I think only the winners of Division 1 should get promoted to the Championship. Only seems fair..............
