Now the longest serving manager in the Championship. So here's a cheer, not specifically for SCP, but because we're using the lessons of stability we learned through the ups and downs of the Curbs early years.
The difference is that Curbs never allowed his contract to run into its last year without signing an extension. Until CP at least starts negotiations on a new contract I'll have doubts about whether or not this stability will continue.
well, aren't you the party pooper? yes, 20th is acceptable, given the improved performances, 0 transfer budget and best 4 players being out. Not where we want to end up, but only one crazy fool would knee-jerk react to a poor start, or get carried away to false expectations by our excellent run at the end of last year. With the youngster blood having been blooded, they'll be stronger tools and we'll be a stronger outfit later in the season, once JJ, Kermit, Solly and Cort are back.
Sorry, but for me being 20th in the league is never 'acceptable'. We are Charlton. We are better than that.
like we were in League One? Don't agree. On paper we're perhaps a few places better, but top half finishing would be a good effort. Long term aim must be the Premier League, but we have a young squad, still maturing and improving, competing with some big spenders and teams with a wealth more Championship experience. Pushing for play-offs next season will demonstrate sustained progress. Our goals return has not been good enough so far, but Church and Kermorgant have potential for a stronger partnership, if we can get the latter fully fit.
I think Yeovil will be bottom so we just have to be better than two other teams for it to be a successful season, for us this is a season of adjustment... we may lose some players in the summer for better salaries elsewhere but we will also gain some... I just hope that Chris and the team decide to drink tea and carry on
Of course 20th isn't good enough, but with Cousins playing the way he is , and the rejuvenated Stephens in midfield we should start moving up. The point is that while there is no sign of The Doctor wanting/being offered a contract extension, there must be a possibility that this stability will end by CP leaving "By mutual consent".
Do people really see CP leaving, by whoever's choice ? I think this would be the worst thing top happen to CAFC within this season, before it finished anyway.
Actually we are 19th following Leeds putting one over Birmingham on Sunday and with a game in hand on the club above us. Being 19th in line for promotion at work is not acceptable either but it is better than redundancy and yes whilst we can all strive to be the best, if we do not acknowledge the real circumstances and adapt to them we will get made redundant even more quickly. I believe that we have adapted/ are adapting to some very interesting financial circumstances this season already and are beginning to turn the corner on the playing front as well. I accept that we are 19th and could do better but will accept 19th if the reality of the situation means that we finish there. However, at least one or two of the big spenders are going to get caught out this season under FFP rules and will have to return money to other clubs if they are promoted, gain miraculous equity investment if they are not or face the more painful consequences that apply otherwise.
It has to be a possibility, otherwise why has his contract not been extended? Looking at the Academy players who have signed contract extensions, it seems to me that the owners have decided that the way forward is by developing our own talent. The latest is Holmes-Dennis, and they have all spoken very enthusiastically about their future at Charlton. The owners have also invested quite heavily in the Academy, and I say 3 cheers for this, it's what I've been wanting to see for ages. However I wonder whether The Doctor feels able to buy into this 100%, while at the same time picking a winning team, which after all is what he's paid to do. Only guessing, but there has to be some reason why his contract is running down.
the youth team will come good. we didnt win all them titles with them last year just so we could release them on free's. we might feel bad losing "star" players at the end of the year, but ten games into next year they'll be forgotten and we'll be cheering on "ones of our own".
Erm... We're 19th people Birmingham losing 4-0 on Sunday meant we moved up as our GD is -5 / theirs is -6 EDIT: Whoops already seen that SuperChrissy has stated that fact lol! (Bit late again), anyone hear we're apparently moving back to the Valley?? I'll get me coat!!
He wants to keep Chris Powell at Charlton, not see him go to 'Boro. Not that anyone on the entire thread suggested that he did.
All time great WUM poster. He personally had me barred from the old site on at least 20 occasions. He used to claim a particular penchant for ethnically diverse ball boys, anti- anything campaigns that would please the Daily Mirror, not to mention his own tragic struggle with Krohns disease
Just had a look at that and it truly sent a shiver down my spine. I reckon he was in reality a BBC staffer who was given authority to pretend to support Charlton. Not knowing very much about SE7 he decided to invent a language in which to espouse the BBC's PC standpoint and eventually deluded himself sufficiently that he had to seek treatment when the old 606 closed down. Released back into the community because of cuts he has returned to work only to find that half of the BBC has gone to Salford at taxpayers expense. He is now habituating an internet café in Upper Regent Street and seeking support for multiple personality disorder.
