According to the Fail (I know!), he's handed in his notice. We all know the press print a lot of **** but this is stated as a fact. But usually if they're just guessing it will be prefaced with something like "We understand..." or "Sources have informed us...". This article starts "Sunderland sporting director Lee Congerton has handed in his notice" - I don't think they would print that unless they had concrete information, or they would be leaving themselves wide open to being sued by the club? I think we can safely ignore the Advocaat bit as speculation, although the rumours are intensifying in that regard... Anyway, if they're right about Congerton it's worrying. Indicates to me Ellis really was being tight with the purse strings. It's a shame as I think Congers was just starting to get things right... P.S. Yeah it's been kicking around last night. Think there could be some truth to this rumor, It's been on the cards for a weeks and nowt to do with our plight . I understand Borussia Monchengladbach are preparing an approach for him (that must have happened). He's got ties to Germany. Hardly rocked, but the press are putting it down conflict as they dream up more drama for us.
Well he's got Eggnog moaning publicly about a lack of quality after the window closes and maybe the club grasping the purse strings too tight. If that's the case the guys between a rock and a hard place from where he's seating. I wouldn't blame him for thinking he can do better elsewhere.
Has he? He's moaned about our business, but I haven't heard him mention Cngertons name. Maybe Dick knows the budget could achive available players, a budget which is unable to test clubs to sell their stars. That's not Congerton that's shorts fault. If we can see Congerton is stuck in between a rock and a hard place surely a man of Dick's intelligence can see the same. I suspect if Congeton does leave it's nowt to do with the current plight which from where I'm sitting he had an impossible job after our Chairman starved us of much needed funds. Certainly not being forced out or anything like that and it certainly won't be news that 'rocks' us as the club will have been aware of intrest in him for a while.
I haven't heard him mention Congers either. But it's his job to get the players in so of course he'd take it personally., even if they both know it's not his fault, but Short's hold on the cheque book that ties his hands. It's always the headline that sticks, not the detail behind it. Imo he's brought in some quality this window. If he does go, I think he can walk with his head held high.
Why would he take the comments personally if they're on the page. They have a good working relationship, I don't doubt he'll know the it was a message to Short for January which is what I think this is all about. Agree I think he's done a good job Rodwell aside.
Just watched football focus and it was mentioned on there along with the DA leaving dinner mid week! Maybe I'm putting two and two together and coming up with five, but one of the names in the frame for the job if Dick goes is well known for refusing to work with a DoF. Just a thought.....
He's brought in players who improve us on paper with a shoe string budget. That's his job. It's the managers job to get them playing. M'Vila, Lens, Toiv, Defoe... Cracking signings and if reports are true he had others lined up such as Richards and Moses who Poyet vetoed for Coates and Buckley, Bridcutt, Scocco et al. You might not like him or his signings but I think you'll find a lot do. He's made mistakes. Everyone does.
He's done a great job, our 4 or 5 best players have all been brought in by him despite a massive financial handicap. He will be a big loss, I'm losing a lot of faith in Ellis frankly and wish he'd **** off.
I think Ellis just needs to take a less active part in things and bring in a proper MD. Congerton has been great in my eyes. I wish we'd seen him given a bit more money/power.
