This is the 11th or 12th time he has had concussion symptoms. We’ve seen this in rugby loads and American footy. Boxing is littered with brain injuries.

Just interested from a moral perspective here, does the game and the authorities have a responsibility or even a right to protect sportsmen and sportswomen from themselves? Or should it be the individuals right to accept the risk in pursuit of taking part in the sport they love?

I love Boxing. I think the rules are close to the line in that the boxers themselves have control but ultimately the regulatory bodies have the ultimate say.

UFC I just can’t get my head around. It’s just barbaric and how someone hasn’t died yet is a miracle.

I guess all sports come inherently with their own risks and some of the players/participating people know the risks that come along with it.

    Racing drivers included.

I think it all boils down to money at the end of the day. Risk and reward.

MMA is generally a lot safer than boxing if the experts are to be believed. Something to do with repetitive strikes to the head in boxing and the gloves allegedly. I love both but I can see why people think MMA is more violent. Just very different combat sports, obviously MMA is far more technical and wide ranging in terms of styles employed.

I dunno. I believe any man should be free to do as they please as long as they are able to understand the risk. But then do we really want to see loss of life in front of ours eyes? I just think something like this young lad at 24, you’re potentially going to have to to make a life changing decision on his behalf. Not just in monetary terms but he’s put his heart and soul into the sport. Certainly if they are going to half to remove him from plying or he is forced to make that decision, we need to get better at handling their exits and helping them to refocus on something else in life.

I’ve seen a couple of the blows he took and they were sickening. After the whole Phil Hughes incident I don’t think the Aussies could stomach after death on the field.

I watched an MMA bout recently and one fighter took 600 blows if I remember correctly. I bet he doesn't remember though.

Yeah plenty of MMA fighters end up just the same as boxers - this whole thing trying to present one as safer than the other is comical really. It’s like comparing Dutch football with English football. Different styles but it’s the same thing. Combat sports are dangerous full stop. You can’t start trying to denigrate one by getting all pious about potential for injury. They’re kicking, punching, kneeing, forwarding, elbowing etc each other in the face. End of story really.

Both are indeed dangerous. I guess the main difference is that while MMA always has a risk of a potentially career ending injury (due to kicks/elbowsy to the face/head or from nasty breaks to arms/,legs), with boxing it's the long term impact of those longer bouts, especially the 12-rounders and constant impact to the head. It's difficult because as spectators, some of the most amazing fights to watch are by nature some of the most brutal and nastiest in terms of risk to the competitors.

But some of there guys just love doing it - it's their life.

That’s where I get torn. We watch amazing sportsmen and sportswomen all the time. There is risk in all sports. I watched the 100ft Wave documentary. ****ing amazing ****. When you see them on these big waves, you question your whole existence and what you’ve accomplished in your life! But **** me it is seriously dangerous. Death is a real possibility every time you get on that board. But they are free, they want it, they live with the risk. It’s like free climbing, all sorts of ****.

I truly believe in not telling people what to do unless they are endangering others really. Otherwise we’d have got nowhere as a civilisation. Actually we’d have got no where as a civilisation if we hadn’t allowed some to endanger others too if truth be told :bandit:<laugh>
