I can see why statistic loving John Henry hired him.

He has said when bringing in new players he looks at statistics like high intensity running and any thing to do with fitness, and compares them to the stats of the top players in the Premier League to see how they would settle and do in England.

But Andy Grey says how can that give you an idea of intelligence and character. Camolli 'thats the but in the story'.

robbed from ja606 (of all places)

HEre are some of the points Damien Camolli was talking about on talksport today -

We signed a player who ticked all the moneyball boxes, but he was a massive failure - Who is he on about? Downing?

Carroll is a better player at LFC. He is very fit. His lifestyle is good. He NEVER had problem with drinking or anything - Stick that in your pipe Capello

I tried to understand what Alonso & Mascherano brought to LFC & replace that by looking at stats. But everything isn't about stats.

Andy Carroll has doubled up his high intensity training & work rate since his transfer from

Andy Carroll covers twice as much ground now as he did when he was at Newcastle

Comolli describing the money ball technique - "It's about using metric statistics to find players based on these facts"

Lucas is very intelligent. He wins balls by his ability to read game. Now he's improved what he does with the ball too

When you try to recruit players, you benchmark your existing players & potential signings with top 2 or 3 players in league

Comolli on Lucas - "I soon as i joined the club i was desperate to get him under a new contract"

My quick summary of the interview.

    • Says Carroll has doubled his high intensity since he moved from Newcastle. (In terms of high intensity running during games. Basically running for long periods of a game.)
    • He likes his stats (I think we all knew that...) but says it's only one aspect and that stats obviously can't tell him about character etc.
    • He says stats aren't everything! Other factors have to be taken into account.
    • Says Andy is a fitter and better on a technical level since his move from Newcastle. Lifestyle is good contrary to rumours about his lifestyle.
    • Says it's only the beginning for Carroll. Lots more to come.
    • Says Lucas is outstanding. Good brain, tactical awareness and being able to read the game are excellent.
    • He's talking about Moneyball now... Using stats to look at your own players and see what areas they can improve. Says it helps find underated players in the market.
    • To sum up Moneyball, it's to try and get a player for less than they are worth.
    • Says Moneyball is important but proper scouting is still vital to finding a good player.
    • You have to have a mix between stats and scouting. If one aspect is good and the other isn't, you have to be very careful when considering signing the player.
    • Hopes he can return to the Premier League at some point.

That's about it. Was a decent interview and gives you an insight into his views on stats, moneyball etc.

He also said statistically target strikers like Carroll peak at 26. Carroll is 23.

And money is what you said, plus using that to find cheaper players in the market.

Andy Grey basically says money ball doesn't judge a players characters and intelligence and I get them impression he does not like it.

Hope they concentrate a bit more on this point after the last batch they bought.

I think he has almost admitted his system is not reliable.

He said he signed a player judged on money ball and it failed, my guess would be Downing.

He also said he once signed a goal keeper judged on money ball and it was a fail. Gomez at Spurs?

Players have to be judged on personality, intelligence, passion etc. Not stats.

Stats at a lower club are easy to achieve, but can they handle the pressure of a top club to repeat them

Adam would fit the moneyball criteria his stats were great and then we signed him. Hopefully he can regain that form.

To be fair to Adam, he has had some good games for us. he can put a good ball in the box and score a few goals.

His main issue is he is a disaster defencively. When Lucas is next to him he looks safe because Lucas defends for him. But with out that he is a liability.

Obviously hollywood passing can be cut out to.

I hope he can get back to his best, it takes some players time to settle. I was waiting for this great dead ball delivery and he was awful.

Not to bad. Compared to Downing's £20.

  18. Well, how many examples have there been of zonal marking being more effective then man marking, but Andy Gray used to pull Rafa to bits after every game on Sky Sports! The mans a joke!

so the guy didn't give any indication of why he got the push then?

so why bother? that was the most important single question for talksport to get the skinny on

Sabermetrics work really well in baseball were you can analyse very easily defined roles such as how often a batter hits a fastball ect. there are too many variables in football for statistics to tell a clear picture. His example of a goalkeeper (I imagine he was talking about Gomez) is a prime example.
