As well as punditry which gets a lot of focus on this board, I am absolutely disgusted by the standard of the commentary itself in English television coverage of football matches these days.

You've got last week with us against QPR with Ray 'My Word' Wilkins' insane senseless ramblings, and then even more bafflingly we're seeing many instances of very well-paid individuals who don't even know the names of Premier League footballers at top clubs.

Look at our match yesterday, with that fella calling Santon 'Santos' and Williamson 'Williams', and now today we've got some dumbass constantly talking about someone called Da Silva who supposedly plays for Man City. How are we meant to take these lazy old dinosaurs' opinions seriously? They really need to get rid of these antiquated cloggers and replace them with people who are actually knowledgeable about the modern game and modern-day players.

Sorry for what could be perceived as a pointless and/or unoriginal thread, but I had to get this off my chest while watching this Man City-Spurs game.

I remember Phil Thompson calling Koscielny, Koszczesny. There's plenty of players that I swear commentators have never heard of until they read the team sheet.

    Yes I do agree, partly.

I can understand that it happens where they mispronounce a name like 'Santon' as 'Santos' occasionally, for example. However if it is happening more and more frequently then it's unacceptable and they shouldn't be commentating.

The bigger problem lies in punditry where some of these so called football experts are too lazy to do their homework and excuse themselves with the phrase 'nobody knows too much about this guy'. Ridiculous!

Does anybody recall a certain mister Alan Shearer saying that he hadn't heard too much about Ben Arfa after the Everton v Newcastle game on MOTD. When he'd been hyped about for the past 3/4 years!

The best commentators and pundits in English coverage seem to be on the Portuguese channel Sport.TV. Always try to find a stream of their coverage when I can.

As for **** commentators, I heard José Enrique referred to as Luis yet again yesterday. He's only been playing in England for almost 5 years, Luis Enrique retired nearly 8 years ago.

I've noticed that most English pundits pay no attention to any other leagues or players, the furthest they will go is Barca/Real, its just so lazy, I had heard of Ben Arfa before he signed for us purely because i follow football and like to see who are the up and coming players, like Reus and Goetze in the Bundesliga. So many pundits have said they have never heard of Cissé before? Many clubs were linked in the summer, so surely they would have a look at him see if he's any good so thya can have some background knowledge, but no, they just use they excuse "I've never heard of him , he might not cut it in the Premier League", some of these so called pundits dont deserve the money they get paid.

Anyone listen to the commentry on BBC Radio Newcastle?

Can't remember who he is but the way he pronounces Tiote (Ti ot eh) drives me up the wall cause there is no other local radio to tune into. Jonhn Anderson pronounces it like everyone else but the other guy persists with Ti ot eh. I end up shouting at the radio correcting him. Even my wife has commented on how he says it and she doesn't really follow the football, but knows how Tiote is pronounced!!!
