Panamanian defender Luis Moreno could get up to three months in prison for kicking an opposing team's lucky owl which was struck by a ball after landing on the field.

British national daily, The Guardian, reported that the injured owl kicked off the field by Moreno during a league match between Colombian football clubs has died.

A veterinarian, Camilo Tapia, said the owl went into shock on Wednesday, after having been taken in for treatment two days earlier.

It died in a local veterinary clinic in Barranquilla after Tapia was unable to save it.

On Monday, Feb 28, the owl landed, injured, near the corner of the pitch during a match between Atletico Junior and Deportivo Pereira. It was first struck by the ball near the Pereira penalty area.

    Play was stopped.

Another British daily, The Telegraph, reported that as the referee and players discussed what to do Panamanian defender Luis Moreno - apparently impatient over the delay with his team losing 2-1 - was seen kicking the bird towards the touch-line with his left foot before Atletico Junior fans chanted "murderer" at him.

He had kicked the owl about three metres to get it off the field.

The New York Daily News reported that Morena claimed he had kicked the bird for its own well-being and quoted Moreno as saying, "it wasn't my intention to hit the animal. What I tried to do was wake it up so it could fly".

Humberto Mendoza, the director of the agency that oversees environmental issues in Barranquilla, has said he will investigate possible sanctions against Moreno.

Felt sorry for the Owl. That was a horrible thing to do to it. That was very horrible as we should treat animals with respect

He could've tawny a little muscle by kicking it. This should be brought up in parliament.

To the best of my knowledge, he didn't kill it. He broke its leg but the owl was expected to make a full recovery. Saw it a few days ago and much as the scenario is amusing, when you see it, it is pretty disturbing and I hope he gets a lengthy ban.

Since when is kicking a bird an offence that can end up with you in prison? Also, from looking at the video footage, he didn't kick the bird, he scooped it up with his foot so maybe what he was saying about trying to wake it up was true. That being said it still is pretty disturbing!

still the same though mate, only real difference is that we convince ourselves killing things to eat them is necessary, which we all know it is not!!!!

We dont eat bacon because we NEED to it is because we like the taste of it out of greed, I would hardly say that is more compasionate
