Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini has been named in the Professional Footballers' Association Premier League Team of the Year for 2011/12.

The Argentine international centre-half has been outstanding this season, not only leading the Magpies to their current standing of fourth place in the Premier League table, but also being part of a rearguard which has kept 14 clean sheets over the course of the campaign.

And on Sunday night Coloccini was recognised by his fellow professionals, who voted for him as one quarter of the best defence in the top flight this term, alongside Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker, Everton left-back Leighton Baines and Manchester City centre-half Vincent Kompany.
The 30-year-old, who put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at the Club in March, has made 35 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring once - a last-gasp extra-time winner at Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup.
Coloccini has been on Tyneside for almost four years and took over the United captain's armband last summer following the departure of Kevin Nolan to West Ham. He made his 150th appearance for the Club against Stoke on Saturday.
It is the skipper's second accolade of the season, having already been named the North East Football Writers' Player of the Year for 2011.

    Bloody well done to you!!

May are fantastic season continue. :)

    Europe here we come.

Nice to see him recognised by fellow players. He has been the best centre back along with Kompany so it just looks right those two filling those roles.

Brilliant achievement for Colo. Even with our current league position, for any Toon player to break into the best XI for the season is amazing.

Our results have been based on a great team ethic, rather than individual 'stars'. But it's fair to say that Colo has been immense.

Great that this recognition comes from his peers across the EPL. Well deserved Mr Colo.

I'd have Walker ahead of him all day long. Walker will be Englands right back for the next 10 years. Just a much better footballer technical wise and at least his equal defensively/positioning wise.

Richards isnt even a regular for Man City, Mancini thinks Zabeleta is better.

He probably is. To be fair though Zabeleta is very underrated over here.

Tiote is the best player in the world ffs. Players just bounce off him man.

MattNUFC, I think you'll find that Messi is away having his hair cut that night -whenever it might be.

How does Scott Parker get onto the final 6 players, then get in the team of the year. He doesn't score many goals, he doesn't split open defences with one pass(a la Cabaye) he gets the ball turns round and then passes to a team mate about 3 yards away.Is it just me!!!

watch parker closely and you will notice he always does a 360 for no apparent reason

hes overrated, i remember watching him whilst he was at newcastle and saw nothing. he slows down the whole play

    A mystery in it's self.
A good player yes, doesn't do anything pretty just gets on with it.
Baines as well, hasn't had a great season. But i can't think of any better LB this season.

he's a good holding mid fielder. Full stop. Not as good as Tiote. Not as good as Cabaye. Better than Guthrie, but not by huge margins
