I've always thought with Colo's exceptional composure and reading of the game, and Saylors big, strong frame and brave approach willing to get his head in anywhere that if we can keep the 2 fit then we've got the best centre back pairing outside of the top 4 which has been proven so far this season.

Now judging by saturdays performance the partnership of Samba and Dann was probably the worst I've seen this season, both constantly being dragged out of position (not helped by the even worse full backs) and couldn't deal with Best an Ba on the ground or in the air.

So why do most of the media/so called pundits when discussing top centre halfs, why do the likes of Scott Dann and Sambas names always pop up? But I don't think I've ever heard talk of how brilliant Colo has been for the past 2 and a bit seasons now. Is it because of that torrid 1st season he had in english football? Is it because he plays for Newcastle who aren't known for the defensive stability?

    What do you lot think?

To be honest I think only the two Manchester clubs have a better centre back paring than us. The problem is we have 2 of the worst full backs in the league. Hopefully Santon will be decent and then we will only have 1 of the worst full backs in the league. A new full back (LB or RB depending on here we want to play Santon) has to be our main priority as I feel full back is our weak link.

Neither of our full backs are worse than messrs Givet and Salgado who were, by far and away, the worst full backs I have seen in many a year

I think our full backs are solid enough, I'm glad they're not Givet and Salgado that's for sure! And in all honesty I don't think Kompany and Lescott as a pairing are better than Saylor and Colo but I'm sure onlookers from afar would tell me I'm delusional for that opinion with very little to back themselves up.

Simpson and Raylor are still a hell of a lot better than some of the crap in the bottom half of the table, I'd rather them than a lot of the full backs around.

Back on topic though, and Colo and Saylor compliment each other brilliantly but will never get recognition because we're Newcastle. We only get recognition when a player is linked to another club, or god forbid, gets an England cap.

  6. We don't have bad fullbacks. Raylor is probably one of the lower ones, be he's not that bad, he can do a job and be part of a decent squad.

Simmo has the ability, he's just gotta get his form back and he needs to learn the things he's doing wrong.

Remember last season was his first full season in the PL, so we should consider that fact and allow the lad a chance. We gave Enrique and Colo 2/3 seasons to get up to speed, let Simmo have at least another season to improve.

He's not that bad when he's in form, and he's definitely not one of the worst.

We don't have the "2of the worst" full backs in the league, just not the best. They are decent. Both have huge weaknesses but "2 of the worst" is going far.

  9. Dann and Samba are too similar IMO. Both big, slow and a big clumsy at times.

Kompany is probably the best centre back in the country and Lescott is probably one of the most under rated centre backs around, people raved about him at Everton like most players but then when he left he became terrible?

I agree Kompany individually is one of the best, but disagree on Lescott always thought his ability to score alot from corners at Everton always clouded his actualy ability to defend, I'd rather have Colo or Saylor than Lescott.

Both Raylor and Simpson have been reading the game very well.. Pleasantly suprised with Raylor, how well he's doing defensively aswell...

Simmo and Raylor have bad positioning and need to iron a few creases before there playing ahead of an Italy U21 standout

    This.

I don't buy into the "Colo has been great for two and a half seasons" stuff. He was naff until Pardew came in, technically brilliant but it was all undone by **** positioning.

In answer to the question about why pundits don't mention Colo and Taylor, I think they do. Taylor was crocked for most of last season, it's only this season where they've had a real run of games together and they've been getting the plaudits they deserve.

  17. Colo and Taylor are a good mix of strength and agility, and both now seem to have excellent understanding and tactical awareness.

Colo & Saylor are perfect for CB pairing, one's big and strong ( Saylor ) and the other is composed on the ball. If we bought a LB ( Cissokho )and switched Santon to RB we would have a better defence than Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs.

    Santon Taylor Coloccini Cissokho

    WOW!

I'm sorry but Kompany and Lescott >>> Saylor/Colo anyday. :/

Note : This is to the guy who said he would prefer Colo/Saylor over Lescott. Lescott is showing the form he showed at Everton now.. that's why the likes of Savic and Kolo Toure are on the bench. <ok>

Personally I think Simpson and Raylor are ok. Not world beaters but both 100% and have good moments. Simpson is our weak link but he's not bad. Had a great deal of sympathy with Samba and Dann. Excellent centre halfs. Whether the balance is right I'm not sure, I like a ball playing centre back who runs the defence playing alongside a physical guy. I like a Baresi type (favourite player of all time). Ayala was very good for Valencia, Fabio Cannavaro, even Carragher under Benitez, I just think it balances better. Colo and Tayls is a match made in heaven for me. Perfect balance of power and skill.

Their problem on Sat was the full backs though, who are painfully slow and never got anywhere near tight enough on Jonas and Obertan. They were dragged all over the shop trying to fill holes. They were critical of Dann for Bas first goal but sometimes you have to credit the attacker. He got his arse in, his touch was good and the swivel was first class.
