Last week I went to Lords to watch England v New Zealand in the test match - without doubt this was the coldest I have ever been at a cricket match. It lead me to start thinking what was the coldest I have ever been at a football match - I went to a game at the Britanna Stadium in Stoke and was freezing - not the temperature, but the wind - for those of you who have not been there the corners are not filled in and the wind gets everywhere. My other vote goes to Portland (not pro football) - not only about 1 deegree, but the wind was so strong that day that when a keeper took a goal kick the wind blew the ball back into the area and the centre half had to had it out for a corner!!!! What's the coldest (or wetest) you have been at football?
Mine was at the Hawthorns when we lost 4-1. I had a t shirt on as it was sunny when we left Bristol. Got off the coach and it started to drizzle, Made a dash to get in the ground only to see a 50ft line of city fans because the turnstiles ticket reader thing had broke so we couldn't get in. Then the heavens really opened. Pissed down I got soaked and then had to stand in the ground wet for 90 minutes whilst city got hammered
I will tell you what really cold is. Andorra, January 2012. Pas de la Casa. -34 degrees in the village at night no wind chill..walking up a short flight of stairs was difficult and your jeans would freeze up from the icy atmosphere in a 150 yard walk to a pub. My nipples had to be glued back on twice..
As a young lad my old man took me to watch Plymouth Argyle at Oldham. In those days Boundary Park had terrace steps with no cover and a large grass area at the back and it was F***ing freezing, windy and snowing the whole nine yards. The game went ahead as they had their plastic pitch back then. Away from football it was with the Army, a very cold winters night in a tent just outside Sarejvo during the Balkans conflict, so cold in my sleeping bag I did not sleep all night. Very grim memories.
Like Banksy I was at the coldest I have been on a ski resort Austria 2006 Schladming it was ok skiing in the day, but one night I went to watch the men's championship ski race at night. Just standing there watching, I was as they say cold through to the bones not even a bath after could warm me up. I don't remember the temp, but don't think I have ever been colder. Andorra 2011 we went for a meal and the roads were all clear, by the time we was finished the meal and walking up the hill, there was about 8"inches of snow fallen. Never seen snow like it not big flakes but was just relentless Coldest night at football was when we played Doncaster can't quite remember the year around 85ish. I was on the old enclosure and that night always stays in the back of my mind I was freezing. Oh and I think we lost 1-0
Coldest I've been at a Match that I can remember Stockport County was the wind that made it so cold plus it was hammering it down and where we were wasn't covered.
Sunderland, Roker Park, January 1964. FA Cup 4th Round. Snow all over the country, 11 hour train journey leaving Parson Street at 11pm Friday night. Pitch cleared of snow but frozen solid. Sunderland, top of Div 2, beat us 6-1, halfway up Div 3 Never been so cold and miserable!!!
Amen to that even though I was in the East End Coldest I've ever been and repeatedly so was when I worked in SE France in the winter of 2004. I used to fly from Bristol to Paris on a Monday and then get 2 trains to Grenoble. On the way back on a Friday I had to change at Lyon Part Dieux for the TGV back to Paris and it was always well below freezing waiting for the connection.
Coldest football match (Canadian Football that is) was at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton Alberta to watch the aptly named Eskimos play host to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL western Final and the temp was -30C and the game lasted 3 hours. One time in Yellowknife NWT (ice road trucker country) I stepped off a plane in to - 45C with a wind chill, wait for it, -72C and on the way to the airport terminal (haha) I had to stop to pick up my nuts (lol). Now that's cold and anyone who tells you that it's dry cold want their brains exchanged.
Ldv vans cup at ashton gate the year we lost to stoke in the final i cant recal who it was against but there was thick freezing fog and on the way back we went past the evening post building and it was reading -8 Another time i was cold was racing moto x in ross on wye on a snow swept january day it was nasty had to wear latex gloves under two pairs of mx gloves and i had to put hand guards on too and i still had trouble holding on
If you can't win something related to cold weather when you live in the arctic conditions of Canada then there is something wrong. Mind you during my semi-annual trips through England I can't believe how cold the damp air makes the temperature feel, especially walking on the mud at B-O-S.
