Sunderland defender Sebastian Coates has been linked with a loan move to Portugese side Sporting Lisbon.

Coates only joined Sunderland on a permanent deal from Liverpool last summer after playing a key role in keeping the Black Cats in the Premier League at the end of last season.

But Coates hasn't started a league game in 2016, with veteran Wes Brown moving above the Uruguayan in the pecking order.

Reports in Portugal have indicated that Coates is close to joining Sporting in a loan deal until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent move next summer.

It is understood that Sunderland have been open to letting the centre-half leave in this window, with the Black Cats boasting the worst defensive record in the Premier League.

And Coates' possible exit could explain reports in France that Sunderland are again in negotiations for Lorient centre-half Lamine Kone.

A deal for Kone has been on-off all month, with two proposed moves falling through - the latest coming last week when Sam Allardyce confirmed Sunderland's interest was over.

But there has been fresh speculation about Sunderland reviving their interest in Kone.

Please god let this happen. We could be very busy at this rate.

Even if we bring in Kone we are still short at cb with Kabouls injury problems, question marks over Kirchoff's ability and The Chuckle brothers being about 90 year old

Don't be too harsh . . . . the Chuckles are only 'about 90' when their joint ages are added together :emoticon-0100-smile

Have to say i commend with Sam on this. Hes just not good enough. Kone and Kirch in, Coates out and getting decent minutes out of Brown, with Kaboul back soon. Sounds like my beloved 352 is coming back!

Some of those buggers could play 8-8-8 and still get brayed.

I thought we usually played 1-9-1 in away games.

Then Rodwell, Toivan, Brown, also out on loan so can bring in 3 more ACTUAL premier league players, or am I asking to much ?

don't see losing Coates as big deal, he is the most immobile defender we have, slow as cart horse as well. Surprised a club the size of Sporting would be interested, having said that, the brand of football over there gives defenders all the time in the world, unlike the premier league.

9;48 Sky sources: Sunderland defender Sebastian Coates is currently in Lisbon to sign on loan at Sporting until the end of the season.

The Uruguayan has made 16 Premier League appearances for the Black Cats this season, and will have a medical today.

I think SC was not as bad as some make out, it was the same with Santi these two were useful low cost cover with potential to adjust and improve with age and good coaching. It will not surprise me if in the future we come to regret their departure.

Seems like Big Sam does not rate him, shame, considering our current defensive options, as it is this area that gives me most concern atm.

To be fair to Coates he was excellent at the back end of last season just wonder if he was playing for a contract

I thought Coates was okayish but too slow mentally and physically for the prem. Assuming Kone is good then we've got him and Kaboul as first choice with Kirchhoff, O'Shea, Brown and Beadling as backup. Theoretically that's enough centre backs I reckon.

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. Coates left over three hours ago. Gerrin.

Sebastian Coates has completed a loan move to Sporting CP.

Portuguese giants Sporting CP have completed the signing of Sebastian Coates on a loan deal until the end of the season.

    Sporting welcomed Coates to the club on their official Twitter account;

They also announced his signing on their official website, with Sporting confirming that they have an option to buy the Uruguayan for €5m (around £3.8m).

Coates only signed for Sunderland permanently in the summer after an impressive end to last season, as he played his part in helping Dick Advocaat steer Sunderland to safety. That impressive form disappeared this season, culminating in Coates dropping down the pecking order once Sam Allardyce took over. Yesterday's signing of Lamine Kone created the opening for the 25-year-old to complete his move to Sporting.

Although Coates looked ill-suited to the Premier League, he should find the style of Portuguese football much more too his liking, so we will hopefully see his move become permanent at the end of the season.
