Sad to hear that three of those killed in the M1 crash yesterday were West Ham fans travelling to the Midlands for the FA Cup match at West Brom. Their vehicle was broken down on the hard shoulder and was hit at speed by a coach from behind causing a 30 car pile-up.

Deepest sympathy to the families of all who lost their lives yesterday and another two early today...

Feel for the families. What a ****ty thing to happen on Valentines Day too. Once was in a car that broke down on the M4. (many years ago now.) It was pissing down and my mates were wanting to stay in the car. I insisted that they let me out (having had it instilled in me by my ambulance driver of a father) and I sat getting very wet while we waited for the AA. 9's may have a more resent idea on this but I was always told that more deaths happen on the hard shoulder then on the moving lanes. Should any of us find ourselves on the hard shoulder, I implore you, get out the car, no matter what, and stand on the other side of the crash barrier.

Yes indeed, that's excellent advice. Not wishing to detract from the very sad and tragic incident that took place yesterday but you should always get you and your family out of any vehicle and get over the armco barrier and a safe distance away. I've no idea what the statistics of death and injury are in comparison to accidents on the main carriageway but I'd imagine they'd be quite high.

I have to say, as a person who drives for a living, that the speed so many vehicles travel at in fog it's miraculous there aren't far more pile-ups of this sort. Many cut across traffic lanes at speed to exit at junctions and I'm sometimes left dumbfounded at the stupidity of these morons, all to save a few minutes on a journey...

Tragic. As Souper says, the way some people drive in poor visibility is totally moronic!

    RIP Hammers' fans.

I was told about the hard shoulder advice (as per 9's advice) on a speed awareness course.
